osCommerce

The e-commerce.

Linux vs Windows

Being that OSC is designed to work with Apache (although it can work with IIS) and Apache is definitely not optimised to work on Windows, I would suggest Linux.

We will not even discuss the fact that your website will not be down as often on a Linux host as opposed to a Windows host. :)

Daemonj is right, also PHP and mySQL are original *nix env products that later got ported to Windows. So if you have a choice go for Linux.

On the other hand osCommerce is 100% Windows compatible.

Obvious difference for osCommerce: not really.

Obvious difference in uptime/stability: YES, go Linux.

Seeing as mysql does not run half bad at all on windows assuming all your indexes and want not are setup -correctly- for a small shopping site most members around here would probably not even notice the difference.

Even with a few hundred hits a second a windows box will still perform fine.

I would choose a linux or unix server over winblows anyday. Anyone heard the story about the server at a university here in the US? It was running linux, and when the school renovated some rooms they accidently built it into the wall.

It took them four years to find it... but it didn't crash once!

Windows can't do that. No Way.

First: "My disclaimer", I'm a die-hard Windows user. My development machine is Win2K.

I have a client hosted on a Windows server, and a test site hosted on a Linux box.

The Linux server wins hands down! Here's why:

*Most Windows servers don't let you change file permissions yourself

*Most Windows servers cost more

*Most Windows servers don't have any additional PHP modules installed

*Linux often runs faster

*Most Windows servers are using IIS. Apache servers tend to provide better error information, such as full paths

*Telnet, SSH and Scheduled Tasks/CRON jobs are usually only available on the more expensive Windows hosting packages
