Adding new fields for items on sale

I manage a website for a book shop, and I'd like to add the possibility to search for a given author, but the search engine can only give results for data in the description field. I'd like to have the possibility to have a dedicated field for the authors, and to search it. Any ideas?

We've done a few bookstores with isbn 10, 13, binding, pages, author, publisher etc. Before you get going you may want to think about what else you want to include in your update as all the same areas will have to be updated (if you are already in there why not do it all at once?)

I haven't used oscommerce in several years. The last time I wanted to try this I had the same problems with wanting isbn fields. I'm a little confused by the way files are added here. Is there one file to download that will allow me to use the "Product Extra Fields"?
