Newbie lost domain and hosting HELP PLZ its my job

Recommended Posts

I have a backup of the website before it went down. Our web guy left for the AF and the boss let the website domain expire and dropped the hosting when they didn't let us know. So now all I have is a few domains, the entire site back up, and all I know is we used oscommerce for something. I've uploaded the backup file to the ftp, godaddy.com is our host now and has the files. Now how do I get this website back up? Or where do I look for the answers/tutorials to my questions?

help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks

You're probably going to need to edit the /includes/configure.php and admin/includes/configure.php file to work with your new domain. Or if you still have the install folder with all the files in it then you could call it up on http://yourdomain.com/install and follow the online steps. If you need that file, you can download the right osCommerce version from their website, grab the install folder and install it into your oscommerce directory (eg. '/catalog' or '/')

Really there are to many If's. The detailed help you need is not easy to send through Email.

I buy my domains and my Hosting through http://www.digisimple.com. Once you have the hosting area you can use an FTP program. You can use AceFTP Free to upload your files. If the structure you had in your previous site is duplicated AND the PHP configuration and Version are the same you might have a site running again.

My advice get a friend that have the technical knowledge.

If you want contact me through my Email, I might elaborate a little more.

Good Luck

that was my predecessor who acted like a big shot but played on myspace on friday nights. I am his replacement. He went to the airforce and left us with a soon expiring domain and a boss who doesn't know what to do. Im computer literate, if its broke i can fix it, but website matters are relatively new to me, im better at networking.

So please dont confuse me with the guy im replacing, I'm a nice guy and would just appreciate the advice and insight you knowledgable and wise webmasters can offer.

Thanks

Tim

OK so now I got it working to the point where the global whatever is on but now its asking for a password for a "restricted area" this is obviously something we have coded in im assuming but where would I be able to find and/or disable it?

Delete htaccess and htpasswd.

Copy htaccess to your computer before deleting it. You may need it later.

Usually htaccess will be in the admin folder. If you're using FTP, enable "show hidden files".

Hey I've done that and I'm still getting that stupid registered globals error. I've searched lots of sites for how to turn registered globals on and found instructions yet they still aren't doing this trick. I'm thinking I need a new .htaccess file or php.ini file but where do I get that code from? Cant find one on w3school.com

If your osC installation requires register globals to be on, it must be fairly old. You may want to think about upgrading to 2.2 RC2a.

Anyway, there are at least a couple of ways to turn register globals "on", depending on how your host has set up the server:

1. php_value register_globals 1

or

php_flag register_globals true

or something to that effect, in .htaccess

or

2. register_globals = on

in php.ini file

this may require a note in your .htaccess file to tell PHP where to find the php.ini file, such as

suPHP_ConfigPath /home/.....full path to file.....store_dir

Your host should be able to give you the details, as they vary from installation to installation. If someone outside your hosting service just says, "oh, you just stick "php_flag...." in .... they're sadly misinformed.

By the way, how were you running without register global variables "on" before, and now you need them? Did your old host have them "on" by default, and your new one has them "off" by default?
