Product image resize

how do i have the product image thumbnail resize its self so that it will not look messed up for example the product thumbnails are currently set to display in "portrait view" but if i have a wider image(landscape view) that is not tall it makes the image all skinny, and when i have it the other way around it makes the images all wide.

 

(I think that is the best way to describe it)

 

another thing, is it possible to make a shipping option based on how far people live? for an example. if they live 20 miles away(or if the zip code matches a set of zip codes i enter) it will give them an option to do in store pick up or home delivery and setup.

http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/1484 for your image resizing. However I would do your own thumbnail resizing if you have access to photoshop you can make a droplet that will resize and resave all your resized images with whatever name extension you wish to add.
