Visual aspects of index.php

I have a cart running that is about 2 years old. In that cart I was able to edit index.htm to make my main page look the way I wanted to.

Today I installed OSC-2.2rc2a and found that there are no HTML files to edit. I did edit index.php by adding some text to be sure it would apear in the main page and it did.

Can I build a table in html with images and links and move the table only into the php file or is there a better way to make my main page look the way I want it.

What I am actually trying to do is put an image on the main page that represents and links to each catagory.

I'm not a programer but I am able to follow instruction well. I have done fine installing add-ons and such over the years but this one has me stumped.

Thanks for reading this!
