Adding new field to customer database to enable / disable user

I am trying to create an admin controlled 'status' option where when a new user signs up, they are kept 'pending' until the administrator gives the user rights to view products. As I am allowing only recognized users to view products, this would be a good secondary security option.

 

I am basing this on how the products are listed as in stock and out of stock and that will display or hide the product in admin panel.

 

Anyone has any suggestions?
