ravyn1 Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Hello all, I want to open an online store, and got the web host, installed oscommerce and now have NO CLUE how to build my store. When you search my domain name, you get an oscommerce page with all these videos to buy, etc. My webhost has a cpanel that has site builders which I've working with for the last two days. I have no clue what to do next can anyone help me? I'm at this point willing to pay someone to build my store. Any help appreciated! Puter illiterate, Ravyn

Puter illiterate, Ravyn You might want to read this thread for starters http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=274968 .... First try the customisations in the thread to get the feel of OSC and then you might want to just start off adding a few products and categories... ... to do this login to your admin section (located at www.yoursite.com/admin ) and go to the "CATALOG" tab and click CATEGORIES/PRODUCTS, then click ADD CATEGORY and then ADD PRODUCT... this will help add a product.... after you have added it check your url to see if it has gone live .... .... OSC is basically a blank canvas and you will need to install what are known as contributions or add-ons sooner or later http://addons.oscommerce.com/ Try a few simple contributions first like i tried the following: http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,1485 CENTRE SHOP (you can specify size and colour of background) http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/5651 SCROLLING SPECIALS http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,887 SCROLLING BEST SELLERS http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/5261 SOCIAL BOOKMARKING http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions,500 EASY POPULATE (allows u to easily upload products using a excel sheet - i would highly recommend this one) This will give u an idea how to better modify OSC to suit your needs, as these are generic these will all be fine to install as is.... What add-ons you add are dependant on your requirements, eg if based in UK you may want to use Royal Mail Shipping Module or you may want a specific payment processing module.... one important thing to mention is always BACKUP before you make any changes .... hopefully this helps for starters and it be be daunting at first but keep up with it Also I would recommend using FileZilla as your FTP just in case your using your browser as its easy, simple to use, faster and best of all FREE! I started with very little knowledge (and still have very little!!), however I have still been able to easily use OSC and almost completed my ecommerce store and hoping to be live in several weeks.
