Category image preview not working in admin

Hi All,

 

If I add a product through admin and upload its image it will render fine on the image preview. (If i click a product name and look at preview pain on the right hand side of screen).

 

However, if i upload an image directly to my web space on an ftp and then add the image reference through either: a) going directly into my mysql database and adding the image name to the appropriate field or B) if i use easypopulate to upload the image reference - the image preview in my admin area will say IMAGE NOT FOUND when i click on a products name to see its details.

 

This is really weird as the image is there, and if i go to the live website you will see the image there.

 

I've heard this happens to other people but never found a support thread on it, or the fix. Can anybody advise?
