What size should my header be?

Hiya,

 

I am having problems with the sizing of images on my header and also on a few other bits. When I view it on my desktop it is all fine (that is where I make most of it) but when it is viewed on the laptop it is all too short. I'm presuming it is something to do with the screen width, but how can I make it fit all sizes?
