Can a product belong to more than one category?

Suppose I have a product that can logically belong in several categories, can it be listed in more than one? For instance, suppose I am selling clothing, and I have a shirt that could be worn in several environments and could be purchased for several purposes. I might want to list the shirt in all of the following categories:

"For fun and frolic"

"Gifts for friends"

"Cotton Wear"

"Wild Designs"

...

What would be the best way to do this in OSC?

Thank you! Now I understand the purpose of the "Copy to" button.

However, that raises a couple of new questions - I noticed that one can list a product by creating "links" or "duplicates". Is it preferable to make the copied product a link or a duplicate? What are the pros and cons of each and in what situations would I use each?

Just reflecting for a moment on this matter, it seems to me that the ability to change or delete categories for the product must be as simple as possible. I may want to delete a product from one category, without deleting it comprehensively from all categories. Or, perhaps I do want to delete it entirely without searching through a hundred possible categories for where I originally listed it 3 months ago. How are these considerations handled?

I cannot address the purpose of link & duplicate in the copy part of the catalog admin, but, I can tell you how I have used them. :)

When I put the same item in a different category, I use the "link". Changes to that product (say product #111) will presumably be shown in all of the linked product.

I also have some items that I buy by the dozen.

I put the individual item in the catalog (say product #111), then copy using "duplicate" to create a second entry. I then edit that duplicate entry for "in lots of 12" with some verbage change and price change. Subsequent edits to product #111 would not be shown in the duplicated product.

Now, if I decide to put the duplicate (say prod# 112) in multiple categories, I again use the "link". Presumably, changes to prod #112 would be shown in all linked entries.

It seems to work well. ...at least "so far". I have not tested my logic yet, I am still entering "startup" product. No changes have been necessary yet.

If someone knows of an error in this logic, please speak up. ;)

When you link the product to more than one category, and then attempt to delete one of the entries, you will be given a list of all the locations in which the linked product appears. You will have the opportunity to decide which ones to delete and which ones to leave alone.

I have another question related to this topic.

I add a new product. I then copy it by linking.

The product now appears two times in the "New Products for (month)" box and is also listed twice on the products_new.php page.

Is this what is supposed to happen?
