Anthony Watkins Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Hi I've followed the advice on this forum to get rid of the shopping cart gifs and have replaced the OSCommerce logo with my own but now I want to add a full width image to the top of my main page. I've done a number of searches but can't seem to find this one - It's probably too easy to appear in a thread! Can anyone advise me how I do this please? Also, What width should I make the image? - I'm assuming that it will need to change when a shopper opens it in a different browser etc. Thanks in anticipation Anthony
Anthony Watkins Posted April 4, 2009 Author Posted April 4, 2009 Me again I've set my site width to 1024 px now and have created a 1024X100 test jpg to see if I can just replace the header image. I've done this and a blank image holding box displays:- www.skyproducts.co.uk The old image was 27kb. This holding image is 70.92kb. Does the size have something to do with this? Anthony
germ Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 The image file appears to be corrupt. If you use FTP to upload, FTP it again, but in BINARY mode (as opposed to TEXT or ASCII mode). Use BINARY mode for BINARY files (images mostly), TEXT or ASCII mode for text files (CS, PHP, HTML, etc. - simple text files) If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. germ Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 The image shows in Firefox, but not IE. You didn't do this, (click me), did you? If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. Anthony Watkins Posted April 4, 2009 Author Posted April 4, 2009 Thanks for your help. I've just created a test image and uploaded it and it seems fine now. Phew!. - I'm going to have fun creating a new header in Photoshop this evening (I need to get out more!) I know that i'm being cheeky but wondered if you could point me in the right direction re creating a mirror of my OSCommerce site on my desktop so that I can meddle with the code etc and upload when I like the look of it. What I've been doing to date is to edit the live site and when I get it wrong, everyone can see. Do I just get an FTP tool such as LeechFTP and then download the whole site and its' subdirectories onto my hard drive? Thanks in anticipation. Anthony
Anthony Watkins Posted April 4, 2009 Author Posted April 4, 2009 Just seen your last post. I was using the file upload facility that my host provider supplied Host Pappa (cPanel File Manager v3). It's a pain becuase I can only upload 1 file at a time rather than...say...upload a whole directory. That's why i've posted my question below. Any help gratefully recieved. Rgds Anthony Thanks for your help. I've just created a test image and uploaded it and it seems fine now. spax Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Some hosts offer a facility that lets you download a zipped backup of your entire site. You might check your control panel to see if you have this. Other than that, I use WinSCP on a SSH connection with which, I can download/upload complete directories.
germ Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 To develop your site on your PC you have to install Winamp or Xamp (or something like that, search for it on the forum there are many posts about it). :) If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. Anthony Watkins Posted April 4, 2009 Author Posted April 4, 2009 Thanks guys. I'll have a look at this now. I've created a backup of my entire site using the functionality in the File Manager . The backup created a file with a 'GZ' extension. I presume that if I completely mess up my site on the server that this is my get of of gaol card! Thanks again. Anthony
