Hello!

I have taken over an already running shop and want to do some modifications. As i a am new to this whole osCommerce-thing i want to test every change i make before going online.

How can i test? Do i have to do a backup and to load the shop somewhere else? Or is there another way??

Hoping for help.

imi,

You can download the entire site and database to your local machine and use Xamp to run it locally. Make the changes you would like, then upload the revised site to your server once you are done with the changes.

Keep in mind, any changes to the LIVE site since you downloaded the files to your local machine will be lost. (orders, new customers etc)

What are you changing? I am only asking because I make changes on my live site all the time. No idea if this is causing me problems though, so I guess I should ask if this is OK?? (Germ?? Is it?? hehe)

But if I just want to change a pic or something, I just do it. I have changed some files and coding, added some contribs, etc on it while it's live and not gotten errors about it either. I've made my index page into quite the mess a few times, but you just go change it back and it's all good. But then my site isn't very busy, so maybe that's why it doesn't hurt anything.

So I don't know if it will work for you, but if you just change one thing at a time and then go look, well... it works for me. Plus then you don't change and code all day only to find out everything is uck-fayed and you don't know why and it's an extra < somewhere.

Hi,

the changes i want to do will need some time before i can get them online again, so i have to do it offline.

I think the idea with the XAMPP is pretty good. What else besides the Database and the "catalog"-directory i have to migrate??

Is the "index.html"-file in the root-directory important??

THX!
