live4soccer7
I am new to this and have decided to use OScommerce as the base for my online store. I currently have godaddy webhosting deluxe and have registered my domain through them. I was looking at zen cart and came across OS and decided I liked what OS had to offer more. Should I find a different host? I know zen has a lot of problems w/godaddy. Any input would be great.
Guest
Nick, I currently host 9 OSC stores on Godaddy without problems. There are many hosting companies available, but I would recommend Godaddy as you already have hosting with them. Chris
live4soccer7
thanks a ton! That is such a relief to hear. It really is. I guess my next question is a something to read on installation of OS on godaddy. I have the installation guide and have a couple questions. First: Uploading the files to my site. I have ftp and am able to connect to the server and upload. Do I upload the catalog and extras folders in the main directory because I read about uploading them to the root. Which I believe is the first thing I see when I open a new ftp connection. It has a stats folder and _db_backups. I just starting hosting w/them so I haven't changed a thing from what they have. Second: I'm not to sure what to do about this part? Using phpMyAdmin or another tool, create your database and user, and assign that user to the database. Write down the name of the database, username, and password for this database for the database installation procedure. Also is it ok that i have a windows based server through them? Is this sufficient or should I have chosen linux?
Guest
Hi Nick, In my case, since there are MANY sites on my hosting account I don't have anything except redirect pages to the various sites I host for my clients. FIRST) In your case, if this is going to be the only site hosted there, you can upload to the root. You don't need the extra's folder as it contains upgrade information from rc1 to rc2a. So place the contents of the catalog folder (not the folder itself) into the root directory. Take care when uploading the images folders as they need to uploaded in BINARY format and NOT ASCII format like the php files do. SECOND) Using myphpadmin, create a blank database using SQL 5.0(preferred). It will ask some information from you. Description: My store/OSC store/ just about anything can go here MySQL Database/User Name: store_db <~again anything you want, but remember what it is ! Password: Create your password......Godaddy will tell you if it is a good password or not Confirm Password: type it again WRITE DOWN THESE SETTINGS It will take godaddy a few minutes to create the blank database. While you wait, you can run the www.yourdomain.com/install At a certain point during the install it will ask you for the database information you just created, something like this: Host Name: p50mysql000.secureserver.net Database Name: (the name you wrote down earlier) User Name: (usually the same as database name) it will then ask for the password you created . then an administrators username <~write this down then a password for the admin account <~write this down If you are successful you will end up at the opening screen which has Catalog and Administration buttons on it. Your Done, that part.......lol.....now the fun begins.......but, the site is set up. Hope that helps. Chris

live4soccer7
Another question. I am new to the SQL world too. I have downloaded the latest SQL 5.1... and also myphpadmin from phpmyadmin.com. I am trying to install the SQL on my windows machine right now and then get myphpadmin up after. Are these the correct steps?

live4soccer7
xampp. if dont know what it is, google it. Ken That doesn't help much.... What is xampp? Secondly when you have never worked w/SQL it's kind of hard to know what to google since it's a broad subject.
GemRock
sorry, if you think you must know sql before you can do oscommerce, then you probably think you need to know how to fly an airplane before driving a car. 99.999% people who use internet would know or be exoected to know what it means by googling it: put the word in google or other search engines to see the results. or do is there a need to explain whta serach a engine is? i may sound unhelpful but i like doing thing in a straightway/simple way. Ken I'm sorry I don't fully understand how OScommerce works. I have only been reading about it for a few hours an am trying to get it up and running. Could you help w/the creating a database part because that is only spot i'm stuck on before I can go ahead and start the installation of OSC. Yes, I know what google is and how to use it. Guest
Nick, You don't need Xamp or myphpadmin on your computer to use OSC. Those programs are already installed on Godaddy. When you log into godaddy- hosting you will see a tab called databases. Click the tab, it will say SQL. Click the icon and choose create new database. Follow the steps I I wrote out earlier to create a new database. It really isn't as difficult as the instructions make it out to be, however being new to OSC I am sure nothing seems simple at this point. live4soccer7
chris, Thanks again for understanding. You are very correct. Not have worked w/this stuff before makes all the information you read everywhere A LOT.
live4soccer7
ok, I have made more progress. Lastly before the setup is complete. What do I put for hostname in the OSC setup?
live4soccer7
I was able to find the hostname in godaddy. I entered it into the OSC setup and now I'm getting an error: There was a problem connecting to the database server. The following error had occured: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client Please verify the connection parameters and try again. live4soccer7
I have been reading that i should switch my godaddy hosting from windows to linux in order to get this working. What do you guys recommend as far as this goes?
Guest
Hi Nick, ummm ya, I find Linux servers much easier to deal with than Windows servers. Godaddy can do it very easily for you. Sorry, I never thought to ask what OS you had chosen for your hosting. Chris
live4soccer7
Not a problem. After a lot of research and a few headaches I found that was the solution. I called em up and got it all switched over to linux. Now i'm just wait for it to all go through and I should be up and running.

live4soccer7
I was able to get it up and running! I changed something that I don't think I was suppose to and it wouldn't let me change it back and then nothing would come up on the url. I'm going to go ahead and do another fresh install and see what happens. Also when I had it up it stated at the top of my store that I needed to change configure.php permission and i believe it stated to delete the install directory. I deleted the install directory and changed the configure.php to 0 instead of 705 and that is when the world came crashing down. I tried to reset it to 705, but flashfxp wouldn't actually change it. Any time I would go back and look again it would always be at 0.
live4soccer7
what do I put under web server root address in the OSC install procedure?
live4soccer7
This is what OSC put as my default: /home/content/n/i/k/niktronix/html/ should i keep this or change it? I have OSC installed in the root of my server/host.
live4soccer7
I got the store up and running now. I still have these warnings at the top of the page though. I'm not sure exactly what it is referring to: Warning Warning: Installation directory exists at: /home/content/n/i/k/niktronix/html/install. Please remove this directory for security reasons. Warning Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home/content/n/i/k/niktronix/html/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file. Also I went ahead and put the following for the web server root address, it was what was there by default. /home/content/n/i/k/niktronix/html/ Also I have another issue that I didn't notice from the first install. The buttons, for example the checkout button is not showing up correctly. Looks scrambled. I was sure to upload the images folder in binary mode through flashfxp. The buttons, for example the checkout button is not showing up correctly. Looks scrambled. I was sure to upload the images folder in binary mode through flashfxp. First of all...If you still have the install folder on godaddy, either rename it or delete it. That will rid you of the first error. Second..... you want to set the permissions to 644 or 444 depending on godaddy. I don't use godaddy but the permissions are the same across most hosts, I think. The configuration files need to have permissions set to 644 or lower. You will find two configuration files. They BOTH need to be changed. One is located in your root (catalog) in the "includes" folder and is called "configure.php". You will find the other by going to your admin folder, then to the includes folder. This one is also called "configure.php". That will get rid of your two errors. As for the checkout buttons, I don't have a clue. I saw your earlier posts as well. As was said earlier, you don't need to worry about xampp or having myphpadmin on your computer. But, you asked and you do deserve an explanation. Xampp is by Apache-Friends. Apache is a server. Once your store is up and running and you have traffic to your site, you don't want to do any testing on it. Any error can bring it down or cause problems and if a site comes down, even temporarily, you lose sales. So... what do you do? you download xampp. It contains an apache server, myphpadmin and other items. What it does is mimic your live (remote) site. With xampp, your personal computer (local or localhost) becomes an environment for testing new items, features, colors, styles, contributions, etc. Once it is tested and working on your personal computer, then you just upload the changed files to your live store on godaddy. But... don't mess with xampp until you gain more knowledge and a lot more experience. Hopefully that explains xampp in a way you can understand and also describes how people test their sites without messing up their live site. Basically what happens is that you install a second oscommerce, but this time on your computer. Then you download the files from godaddy so that you have an exact copy of your website... on your computer for testing. But this won't be needed unless you want to make changes after you are live. I hope this helps.... Paul
Guest
Nick, The button problem is usually caused by trying to upload the images folders in ASCII mode when they should be uploaded in BINARY mode. Most FTP programs auto switch but at high speed, the images are not transferred correctly. I would suggest uploading the images folders again in Binary mode to correct this problem.
