Dray
I design websites and have a customer who sells boats. He would like a website that presents a number of photos of his boat, along with specific specs regarding them. He would also like to be able to add and manage the inventory of boats himself. The boats would not be sold online, obviously - this would be a bit like a autotrader.com website. My question is this - would osCommerce be a suitable solution? Would it be difficult to "disable" the merchant component, and provide pages with a lot of detail about a boat? In effect, how reasonable is it to use osCommerce strictly as an online inventory management system? Any comments and suggestions are welcome. Thanks....Duane
i2Paq
This is possible with the help of a good PHP coder and the contributions found here. Norman in 't Veldt Moderator osCommerce The Netherlands
Dray
Thanks, Norman. Since I am not a good PHP coder, I conclude that you would not recommend trying it. I guess it is not simply a matter of switching some parameters off and others on. Were there specific contributions/add-ons that you think I should look at? Thanks again....Duane

Dray
Thanks, Jim! This contribution looks like it would be a real time-saver for what I want to try. Many thanks...Duane
Dray
Just wondering if anyone can point me to an example or two of the osCatalog contribution in action. Has the contribution been applied to an osCommerce website that is currently online? Thanks....Duane
burt
I did the same a long long time ago for a person selling high end cars. It was OK, but it soon became clear that I should have used "something else" (a script made specifically for showcasing cars). Having said that, about 8 months after I built it, he decided he would like to start actually selling cars via the site, so it was easy to "turn on" the buy buttons etc. However I still wish I had used a proper script from the start. Dray
Thanks for the advice, Burt. The script for showing cars - can you point me in the direction of one that would be appropriate? Does the script include an admin component that allows a non-technical user to maintain the inventory? Thanks again...Duane
nathanclark79
Hi I have recently posted a car dealership catalog using the catalog contribution and while I did have to make extensive adjustments and 1 complete reinstall lol the site is up and running with no shopping cart features just a catalog. you can see the demo here --> www.paradiseautobrokersinc.com Site is not done yet but you can get an idea of how it will look with the contrib applied. Hope this helps anyone else who might have been looking for a solution like this!
♥zelf
FYI, I will be releasing a contribution at the beginning of April that will revolutionize inventory management, inventory demand forecasting, tracking cost of goods sold (COGS), valuation reports, inventory receiving, PO creation, backorder tracking, and many inventory management functions all with a very fast ajax interface that makes it a million times faster than using Quickbooks for example. PM me in April if you do not see the announcement. Virtual Merchant a.k.a. Elavon, ViaKlix, Nova Payment Module Contribution
