How to force attribute selection

I am having no major issues with my attributes, order of attributes, weights, pricing or stocking of them but do have an issue where a customer will order an item and that item has say 4 sizes. The default size being small and working up to a larger size. If the customer goes to that item and doesn't change the default setting of small then that is the size they get even though they may need a larger size. How can I make the attribute selection mandatory before it can be added to the cart, in other words how can I force them to make a selection before the item is added to the cart? The way it is now, the selection of small is already filled in and if they are not smart enough to make the selection then the order ends up wrong and causes returns.
