breadcrumb - extract category or sub-category name

How do I extract the current category and/or sub-category name and display it in catalog/index.php page?

 

Currently, the word "Categories" is displayed when we click on a particular category in the Categories menu; and the word "Let's See What We Have Here" when one of its sub-categories is clicked. But I want to display the current category and/or sub-category name instead.

 

The original breadcrumb class doesn't provide a function to display the current category/sub-category name?
