Windpower Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I have just installed osCommerce and when viewing the shops front page I get this warning message at the top of the page in pink: Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home119c/sub009/sc66806-RYEZ/www/shop/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file. I cannot find where to set the user permissions. I have searched but no luck. Can someone help?
Guest Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Troy, Using your FTP program, locate catalog>includes>configure.php.......right click on it and set permissions to read only. You will also want to do this to catalog>admin>includes>configure.php Chris
Windpower Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Thanks for the help Chris. I changed both of those but I still get the same warning message. Any other idea?
Guest Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Troy, If this error persists, it can ONLY be that the file is still writable. I don't believe there is any other solution to this. What is the website URL ? Chris
Guest Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Thanks for the help Chris. I changed both of those but I still get the same warning message. Any other idea? Are you sure you changed the permissions of these files on the server? How did you go about doing it?
germ Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 You need to try permissions in this order until the warning disappears: 644 444 400 FTP usually doesn't work at this. Most people have to login to their Webhost's cPanel and do it there. Not all cPanels are created equal so if you can't find the part to change permissions seek support from your Host. Also be aware that permissions less than 644 make the file "read only" (even to you). All this means is that in the future if you want to edit the file you'll need to change the permissions to 644 before making any edits. If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. Guest Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Tip: Cute FTP and FileZilla DO Change file permissions without problem. Never used an FTP that didn't....but, I know for sure those two work well. Cpanel, ummmmm......never had a real use for it..........lol JMO Chri
Windpower Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 Thanks everyone for your quick information. I am using WS FTP Pro and after right clicking and setting the permissions to 444 it's all good now.
Windpower Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 I just remembered reading here somewhere to have those two files set as low as possible (for tighter security). So I took it to 400 and the site appears to be still working. Thanks again.

But the OP here was one of the "lucky ones" and FTP worked for him. If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you.
