Connectivity Issue and Proper Backup of PHP files?

Recommended Posts

Wow. I'm getting frustrated here. I'm trying to follow good procedure and backup my PHP files before editing. But due to inexperience and/or a combo of (maybe) non working configured network/user access I'm having a boat load of trouble.

I'm using Vista. I have a network connection to my domain. I can access the osCommerce files in my file explorer in Vista. However I cannot paste (after copy) or directly move files into other directories. For example I have a folder named BACKUP_PHP_FILES. I was able to create this folder on the domain. But why can't I move or copy/paste to it??

I also have an unrelated picture hosting account that I can log onto and move- copy- delete - no prob. Obviously my network access is working for this connection. So I'm thinking there is something in OSCommerce or maybe my hosting company (GoDADDY) that has added layer of protection?

I also use Crimson editor. Sometimes I can log into my domain and open up the files - but trying to back-up (save as backup1-index.php) into the backup folder - no luck.

Additionally I have noticed the osCommerce Admin section has a file manager and editor. Is there a way to Save As: "back up" there? I don't see any way. This would save me all this connectivity frustration - as I can edit and save there without problems. But of course I write over the original file before backup - not a good thing. Fianlly I noticed not all the folders show up in the osCommerce file manager. There are more folders/access showing in file explorer in Vista. What gives??

Anyway, I am curious how others proceed. What is the best and easiest method to back-up and edit PHP files? Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks, -Will

Are you using an FTP client ? like Filezilla? I make a habit out of copying a file I am going to edit as the original and saving the one I edit with a new name.
