yes and i do it without using easypopulate

all you do is export and import with phpmyadmin

to a text file when exporting in csv (not csv for excel in my case)

uploading can be done with copy and paste straight out of excel

It surprised me after I got used to it, phpMyAdmin is a great tool. Learn it and you'll have no problems.

I'm going up and down with about 80,000 products

~Yeah, sometimes I find other things to do while I'm waiting...

How do you create categories and change entries in the product description table? Seems like a lot of extra work using phpmyadmin, not to mention not as convenient. I'm not attacking you - just being curious.

Hey Jack,

Here's a link http://www.oscommerce.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=172479

I think that covers the basics.

In my case categories boils down to another huge conversion between two different databases written in different computer languages. But everything can and is converted to csv, set up in excel spread sheets, then loaded in mass.

So yeah, update products, update categories, update products_to_categories, update manufacturers, create & load pics to directories all are separate jobs.

It's a big job.

It's been a long time since I tried Easy Populate. right now I'm working on loading about 8000 new products. Do you think EP can save me time & effort?

Joe & David - Easy Populate doesn't have a limit on the number of products in the file but there is a limit imposed by the server your site is on. Shared servers will time out if the feed gets too large but there is a split option you canuse or the file can be manually split into sub-files. I break mine up by categories. With that many products, it might take some time to initially setup the files, but you should only have to do it once. The amount of time and effort saved as a result of using will far out-weigh whatever time is lost setting up the files.

In my case, converting csv data to anything close to something mysql would accept, thank goodness I was able to use excel. Correcting for hundreds of thousands of misplaced ,".' not to mention

vlookup

countif

consolidate

merging fields

dropping CAPS

trim

substitute

=if

I don't see how I can avoid maintaining product, category, and manufacturer conversion routines. Descriptions are a huge undertaking, merging 24 fields into 12 mysql fields. No this isn't quick. It's a job and it makes money.

I haven't mentioned the pictures have I?

Jack, I'm not doubting easypopulate and I really am going to try it again very soon. But I've found by merging fields in excel I can simply copy an excel column (merged, copy&paste as values, containing many many sql columns) and paste it in a phpmyadmin sql box. Depending on the data you can get about a fifth of a sheet in one crack. (a fifth of typically 35,000 per page or maybe 7000 rows per paste).

Of course anything out of whack in an upload and write to the server that takes this long can end at the error, write nothing to the db, or do anything it wants. You need to be very exacting.

My suggestion is to follow Jack's advice. Try easypopulate. But it's not the only game in town.

What's up fellas...

I have been pondering this same thing for a minute. I want to be able to Upload Multiple Products at once.... Not just download and edit then upload. I want to be able to add products. Is this what EP offers... maybe I am wrong I got the impression that you download - update - upload.

Cause if you can upload multiple products at once then I am gonna download it. I just question the images... I guess you have to upload those individually.

Maybe I don't even have a clue LOL... which is why I am posting on here cause I am sure some of you do

Thanks,

Lonny

Yeah Yeah I am learning as I go... lol

You can add new products w/EP. It will create the categories, if they are not there. This includes misspelling an existing category so take care.

It will create, or update, products based on model number. You can make existing products inactive, update existing products or add completely new products.

I download a full sheet and then just save the first two lines as a template.

Pictures are uploaded separately via FTP or My Network Connections, etc.

The only thing I'm not familiar with is the use of EP and product attributes, because I don't use them.

Good Luck.
