kcwms Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 A freelancer working on my website mistakenly eliminated files that enabled my customers to click on some of the featured products on my homepage which would take them directly to the corresponding product page. He apparently didn't back anything up. He also eliminated the function that allowed me to upload new featured products on my homepage so the product images that are currently showing up on my homepage are permanent. Previously I was easily able to change out featured products as often as I liked. Any idea of how to restore these functions without paying somebody to re-do the entire thing? I'm not sure how he screwed it up but he's not returning calls/e-mails so I'm on my own.

Hi it may help if you provide a link to the problem, unless of course you know what files were deleted, its hard to figure out what mod you were using without being able to see it. What were you using /doing to change the featured products? If you know what it is called we probably can find the contribution in which it came.

Forgive me for what a moron I am about this stuff........I'm a boutique owner; not a computer person. But in case it helps, here's the link to my site: www.thereignofcatsanddogs.com. Note the 3 big bubbles in the middle: they used to be clickable to the actual product page and also changeable. I only changed them once and it was a matter of simply uploading new images. It was somewhere really obvious in Admin or I never would of found it. I think it may have been in 'Catalog' under 'Featured Products' but honestly, I'm not positive because it was quite awhile back.

But it sounds like you use or (used) "Featured Products": http://addons.oscommerce.com/info/651 However I will point out there is a more serious issue on your site: Warning Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home/content/t/h/e/thereignof/html/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file. You'll need to set the file permissions for this pretty quickly. Make sure that the includes/configure.php file and the admin/includes/configure.php file are set to 644, 444, or 400 depending on your server setup. If you are uncertain try setting the permissions in that order. And then visit your homepage and see if you notice the warning at the top of the page.. it kinda blends into your site due to color scheme. The easiest way to change the file permissions is to log in your control panel yourwebsite.com/cpanel Access the file manager and find includes/configure.php On the right side there should be a permission thingy, it should look like 0777 or 777 you'll need to change that to what was said above. After you do that go check your home page and make sure that warning is gone. If so then.. The next file would be at admin/includes/configure.php Once again change the file to what was said above PS I like the website design.
germ Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 To make the bubbles clickable again you need to add the code in red: <img src="images/main.jpg" width="500" border="0" USEMAP="#main"> If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you. kcwms Posted February 1, 2009 Author Posted February 1, 2009 I know.........the warning on my webpage was supposed to be fixed earlier today but the person helping me apparently couldn't figure it out. Scroll down the Topics and you'll see I posted a question about it earlier tonight :-) Per your instructions I went to my Admin and found Includes/Configure php but there's no permission box thingy. I know what it looks like because I saw an image of it earlier tonight........it's not there. Just some code that looks Greek to me. I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong. Thanks for answering the question about how to make the featured items clickable again. I'm not sure where to add it but hopefully I can figure it out. Sadly, I need to be able to change all the featured items out (some of them are out of stock as we speak) but apparently that's more complicated?
NodsDorf Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Hi Kim, To change permissions you need to be in your CPANEL not Admin section To access your CPANEL it would be yourwebsite.com/cpanel Oscommerce backend is your admin panel, your websites actual backend where you add remove emails and such is the Cpanel Inside the Cpanel should be a file manager you can use that to browse files on your website, much like what is available in the admin panel except you can change permissions in the cpanel. Your Cpanel should look like this (FOLLOW THE LIGHTING BOLT TO YOUR FILE MANAGER) Your File Manager Inside your Cpanel should look like this (FOLLOW THE LIGHTING BOLT TO CHANGE PERMISSIONS)
kcwms Posted February 1, 2009 Author Posted February 1, 2009 Yup, I tried that earlier and got a PAGE NOT FOUND message so I assumed (mistakenly) that maybe I was supposed to be in Admin. Tried it again just now and got the same message. It's indicating that it's possible my website hasn't been uploaded OR 'correctly uploaded' ..................which makes my head want to explode. Many thanks for your kindness in trying to help me...

Many thanks for your kindness in trying to help me... Ahh I see you use GoDaddy.com for your host. I know there are some funny things with them, maybe they don't use cpanel. But what you do need to do is to get into the backend of your system. Godaddy.com should have emailed you an account management user name password with a link to where you can do stuff in the backend.. that is where you need to be.
