Product Options error (Total newbie)

Hope someone can point me in the right direction here. When adding a option to a product such as Color i get the following on the item : 1054 - Unknown column 'popt.products_options_type' in 'field list'

 

select distinct popt.products_options_id, popt.products_options_name, popt.products_options_type, popt.products_options_length, popt.products_options_comment from products_options popt, products_attributes patrib where patrib.products_id='184' and patrib.options_id = popt.products_options_id and popt.language_id = '1' order by popt.products_options_name

First off I have a friend who said he knew the software well and was going to fix things so I could have the option to have a text box for the customer to type in a message they would like to have printed on their item, Well since I allowed him to do this my friend has vanished and I have no idea what he did to mess this up. I had a backup and did a restore but the error is still there. So gave thought to just reinstalling the software but I have over 200 products added already and would hate to have to redo all of that. please help I am a total newbie to this and have no idea where to turn.
