Error in english.php

I was trying to change the copyright date at the bottom and ended up with an error on line 158. So, in my wisdom, I restored the backup copy I had made of the store. That made it have a million strange things going on and I don't know how to fix it without just redoing the entire thing - which I really REALLY don't want to do. So I thought I could do a backup restore and everything would be back to normal. Nope. That made things worse. The store could be viewed but instead of the links to other pages showing up as "Conditions" and "Contact Us" they were showing up as the Header Titles as if I was looking at the codes. Then I realized I shouldn't have done a backup restore through My Admin, I should have done it through the MySql but I don't know how to do that. So I uploaded the changed english.php file hoping that once I get that code fixed, the rest of the store will be fixed too.

The only change I made to the english.php file was to add "2008, 2009" at the bottom. Now I get "Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/funky18/public_html/includes/languages/english.php on line 158"

Multiple errors were present.

Looks like you edited it with an unpatched version of the osc File Mangler.

Use a simple text editor next time.

I fixed it.

Just copy/paste from my post.

I tried it on my site.

No runs, no drips, no errors.

;)

But making backups before editing anything is a excellent tidbit of advice.

That one thing alone may save you hours (if not days) of grief.

Thanks again. I normally do make a backup before editing. I copied & pasted from your post and now there's something else going on. It posts the entire english.php file and then has the site but there's still errors.....I'm probably not describing it very well. The first line is screwed up.

It needs to be:

If you copy/paste from my post, open a blank text document with Wordpad and paste it into that and it won't be all "run together".

Oh my. I swear the dumbest mistakes make the worst problems. Thank you so much! And I did copy and paste into a word doc first but I forgot to paste unformatted text. It makes a difference in the program that I use. But of course when I remembered I have notepad, it was perfect!
