Hi, I hope someone can help me. I know nothing about websites. I could not get oscommerce to load when I purchased my website so I started with rvsitebuilder. I needed oscommerce because I want paypal etc. so I got help @ my web host to get oscommerce in my system. I now cannot do anything with it. when I try to open my index.php I either get a message in my message bar saying that my explorer security will not let this page download. I have changed security for my page- (or at least I think I did) then if I try to open it by dbl. click I get a acrobat reader error saying that it cannot be read because it was installed incorrectly or there is some file issue. am I doing something wrong? if I right click and click on edit I dodnt see anything that looks like what I have read here and there is nothing for me to change.is my catalog folder supposed to be in a "Ruby" folder? Please help. I have fought with this for almost 2 weeks now. I am going crazy! Thanks- Patti

Hi there,

I am not too familiar with how osCommerce works myself as I am pretty new to it however i do understand how to make websites and some of the foundations of PHP (the language that osc is written in)

The first thing that I suggest is to check out the latest documentation >>> http://oscommerce.sunsite.dk/snapshots/osc...on-20090117.zip

The second thing that I suggest failing that you do not solve the problems using the documentation is that you do a fresh install.

Start by deleting your current catalog folder and follow the instructions accompanying a fresh copy downloaded >>> http://www.oscommerce.com/redirect.php/go,44

I suggest using an FTP program such as SmartFTP so that when it comes to modifying the access to some files (CHMOD) you can do it very easy through rt.click CHMOD then ticking boxes/typing the code.

Hope this has been of some help to you!

You know, I had many install problems when I tried to install oscommerce from a source other than my webhost's control panel. I have had only problems with getting things done that I want to change since I did it from my host's site. I wonder if that makes a difference in all of the problems that some have. If you are going to do a fresh install, check to see if your host has a way to download and install it from their control panel. It might help solve some of the problems you are having. It did for me.

Good luck,

Chelle

Don't use your host control panel. Never rely on anyone else unless you absolutely have to.

Do it the manual way by downloading the latest stable version of osCommerce (presently RC2a), then upload it all via FTP. Then follow the on-screen instructions.

If you cannot manage this, it is possible that you will struggle to use osCommerce (or any other cart) ongoing.

Hmm, weird. I only had problems when I didn't use my host's control panel links to install. I've been up and running for a year now with just minor problems, most of them were things that I wanted to do, like cosmetic stuff. Odd.
