Ok, this isn't REALLY oscommerce specific, but i am having a heck of a time trying to get a complete backup of my store!! I try using FTP to download to public_html folder, and it times out.. then my control panel has a backup wizard but even then my browser times out before i get a complete backup.. So how do you do it?? i have LOADS of pages and lots more images that make up those pages..

ANY suggestions?

I am just starting to get my XAMPP working, but i just can not even TRY to test it without a complete backup!

Try using a different FTP client. FileZilla works for me. When you are trying to transfer a large amount of files like that there is normally a lot of failed transfers, but then you just select those files and process again.

I have ftp'd my entire store and it's HUGE. It took forever, and I did have a few timeouts. Then I realized that I didn't need to dl the product images. It's much faster if you don't include them.

Well, i would like to have all the product images and everything just incase... BUT i contacted my host, apparently they automatically time out for security so i need to set up a secure ftp andSSH

I had a couple of accounts on the same host once. When I went to have them close one of them out, they closed the wrong one. When I say closed I meand deleted. All files, db's and PICTURES. Over 2000 of them. Can you believe they did not have a backup? Neither did I. Sure I had the files and db BUT NOT THE PICTURES!!!!!

My advice, make sure you have those backedup as well

If you have to you could download just the pics and then go back and download just the files.

yea.. i thought about doing it separately, but theres more than JUST product images, theres the portfolio images, the product downloads, SOOO many things!!! i just have to figure out how to set up the SSH. they said i have to fax a copy of my liscence and then theyw ill set itup so JUST me can do a large download from my site.. Its a pretty cool security feature, but i wish i knew about it in advace

I also would NEVER not download and eNTIRE copy of my site.. although my host does an automatic server hosted COMPLETE backup every month for me.. but i just cant download it fromt he server

Very true. So did I. The problem was that we were spread out on 2 different ones. As fate would have it, the one with the majority of the pics was damaged when a power surge ran through. I still have not been able to get that computer running since.

Now I put all of my backups on cd's as well as the hard drive. Just in case the stars line up against me again in the future. Hard lesson to learn but one I will not forget.

bktrain.. there is an AWESOME service called carbonite.com and for $ a year, they will store LOTS of files off site. We use them because being a photography company, we have to has as MANY possible backups of our customer's files as possible.. So we use carbonite.com, then we store on a portable wireless harddrive, and we burn the completed pictures to CDs and store them inside a fire proof box specifically for DATA..

Yea, we are ANAL!

Trust me, there is nothing anal about that.

yea.. actually there is an offer code for a free 3 month trial or something.. I was hearing ads for them all the time on my sirius radio and finally checked them out.. $50 a year for peace of mind is NOT bad.. We had our computers stolen frolm our house once, AND i have had a fire.. id o NOT want to loose anything.. offsite storage is the most reliable type.

AIRBRUSHMASTER how big is your store? I have atleast 5000 products, then 10,000 downloadable files, about 3000 portfolio files, then all of the files for wordpres

I had the same thing happen to one of my computers, so I wholeheartedly agree about backing up on a cd!

Which, come to think of it, I am way overdue on...

Yes, but when this happend it actually knocked power out for almost a minnute. Once power came back on the computer would not work again.
