Easy Populate question

Alright, so my company is looking to use this osCommerce completely, but to do this we need to import our current data sheet into the product database.

I have been toying around with this for a while, and I feel it would benefit me greatly to have some support on this.

 

I am using the EasyPopluate module, now I've read the documentation on it and I am pretty sure I have a decent working idea of how it works. I don't see a need for all of the extra columns... Are they required, or can I simply omit them out from the datasheet?

If a field is blank or not there (column deleted) in some cases they are set to a default value.

 

I believe the documentation covers this.

 

Try it, if you reload the file with additional data it just updates the records, so you can do it over and over again until you get it right.

I think that EasyPopulate might be a waste of my time.

 

There are too many columns that I'd have to create new values for each of our products,

there doesn't seem to be a way to have the serial number column added, easily anyway.

 

I put one item in the database via the built in GUI with oscomm, and when I downloaded it I saw the need for about 8 of the 50 columns.

EasyPopulate doesn't seem to be that easy.

For example, if your subcategories are only 1 or two levels deep, then you can delete the others - I think there 7 columns in the sample file. And if you don't use product attributes, you can delete all the columns for that as well. Just backup before experimenting. :)

You can easily use EP for a field like serial number. In the documentation it explains how to do extra fields.

The EP documentation covers how to get EP to update non standard fields added by contributions.

 

I'd create an 8 column upload file to start with.

Dont' know how the formatting is going to work in there, anyway..

It all seems to be working, minus the fact that it's not going into the category that I want it to. Any idea why not?
