safely protect customer information while site is being improved

Hello,

 

I'm hiring a contractor to provide maintenance to my osCommerce based website. I would ideally like to copy a mirror of my site to a directory and have them perform all changes on that mirror.

 

How do I protect my customer's information? Should I create a new dummy database for my contractor to use?

 

What I'm trying to avoid is any access to confidential information.

 

I suppose it's obvious but I have limited experience with osCommerce.
