Recommended Posts

I've submitted my site to search engines and added metatags.

I would really appreciate if anyone could suggest other ways of getting people to my site without having to spend loads of cash for advertising etc. I'm pretty new to all this and SEO contributions etc scare the sh*t out of me incase I wreck my site  .

Any ideas welcome!!!

Also looking for some feedback on my site as this is the first I've built so please have a look and let me know what you think

my site

Thanks in advance,

Michelle

Hello Michelle,

When I started I didn't have any money to spend so I had to be very creative to get traffic. After 2 years of experience with oscommerce and selling online, the best tip I can give you is to do some research on Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, Live) for keywords (fancy dress, lingerie, fetish wear, etc) and look at how the others did it to reach the top search result positions. Mostly they have alot of incoming links. Just as in real life, the more connections you have, the more traffic you will get and the more you will sell.

You can also take a look at the following article on link building:

Hope it gives you some ideas. Nice site! Keep it up

This is way too big a subject for a post on this forum.

The point of any SEO is to get eyeballs on your site - but what you need is qualified traffic, not just any old traffic. There is no point in getting people on your site who are not interested in what you are selling.

At this point, the ONLY search engine that matters is Google. Forget the rest.

Google likes incoming links to your website from other (related) sites. So if (for example) you are selling vibrators then get links from other sex shops, from "sexual health" forums and blogs, from your suppliers, from the manufacturers of vibrators and so on. Get your site listed on dmoz.org (this is actually quite hard for a shop to do), so instead start up a "sexual matters" blog and get that in the search engines - then link from your blog to your site every so often. You can use other ways of getting traffic, web2 - Yahoo answers, sphinn, digg, reddit and so on - again, might do better to get these going to a blog, rather than a shop.

How about a USP - Unique Selling Point - what differentiates YOUR SHOP from all the other sex shops out there. How about "personal service" - eg, "we only sell what we like and use"

Anyway, that's a start for you.

You might also want to differentiate your sites look from the other 20,000 osCommerce stores using that same layout.

Yes, I know - still in the process of getting everything on.

I also have a full-time job, two young kids and an ebay store so trying to get products on whenever I get the time.

Hopefully will get a good bit of time this weekend.

Also need to keep updating prices as my suppliers keep changing their prices atm due to the decline in value of the pound against the euro and the dollar.

Is there an easier way to do this rather to having to change each one manually?

Hi, thanks for the ideas - will get started on these. I have already started getting links on other sites and directories, but I'm a complete newbie to programming and not confident enough to start messing about with the layout of my store. Ares there any reading material or tutorials you would recommend for this?

Thanks for your help,

Michelle
