New install - catalog shows index and error 404

I've gone through a lot of this forum and tried lots of the suggestions here, but I can't get it to work. The catalog shows the index when I type in the web address. When I click on the catalog icon after installing I get error 404.

Also, my pictures show up as red x's and the buttons are barely there. I've tried bringing over each image file in the FTP and they were done in Binary. The path names are correct and the image is there. These are the default images. I haven't had the chance to add anything to the cart. I'm just trying to get it to work.

Please, keep it super simple and explain, cause that is about my skill level on this stuff. simple. (makes me mad, lol)
