Shipping modules

In general I seemed unable to find much documentation on the shipping modules.. But never the less I seemd to get the ups working by simply clikcing for it to be installed. The only option is ground,... How boring is that? When i choose to install any other shipping method (fedex or usps) it barfs with :

That error will roll for a long time.. leaving literally thousands of lines of the same.

 

So i guess I need help with that, and perhaps a grander question: If i struggle through and get the built in modules working, will I be able to have the buyer choose between which shipping methond, next day, air, 3 day ... so forth? IF not, it's not worth even messing with.
