Help with header navigation

Hi,

I've been searching this site for a tutorial on how to make custom navigation buttons in the header and I couldn't find anything

so I apologize if this has already been explained.

I'm trying to change the grey header with "top-catalog" "my account", etc to a custom banner with buttons linking to their respective category.

I like the style of this template: http://osc3.template-help.com/osc_21869/index.php

but it doesn't have to be exactly that. Just the general instructions.

 

Also, is there a way to add a category box in the middle of the front page that show pictures of each category,

like at the bottom of this site: http://www.printsellers.com/?

 

Any help would be appreciated.
