Hello itworks,

A bit more info needed. If your are on a broadband connection then you will in all likelyhood have a static IP address which means that you will need to entertain firewall and masking technology. If you are on a 56K connection then your ISP should be able to provide limited protection but you will still be better off installing a firewall or two...

Norton iws the biggest, but not necessarily the best. However, it is better than nothing and provides half decent support for updates on net security and antivirus software until you figure out the market.

A copy of Norton Net security with antivirus is either around 50 squids, or free of next months computer shopper.

Have fun.

Hi, what exactly are you trying to protect ?? Your neighbors dog ?

Your shopping cart during checkout, or the administration ? or both ??

what i meen is how can i protect my root folder (localhost) with a username and password, do that for connecting to the database it will be required to have that permission and also in the administration area.

i'm really sorry, and i thank you for you patience!

Oooohhhh...

I get it. Firstly, don't put a password at the root directory or no-one will be able to acces the site.

Password Protection facilities should come with your hosting package, just log into the CP add a user and apply the action to the directories that you want to protect and NOT the localhost...

so what you are saying is that i shouldn't worry about that when developing the sites in my localhost and i just add the username and password provided by the server in the scripts when i upload the files into it?!

i'm sorry about this stupid questions but i'm very knew to all this and i can find good documentation on this.

thanks.

Erm, no.

Your being too specific. Forget the coding and programming, it is much easier than that!

Your web hosting company (I'm assuming you use thrid party hosting facilities as your new to this), will have a Control Panel facility on their servers. If they haven't you're with the wrong hosting company so the chances are they will.

The Control Panel is the place where you go to get Statistics for the site, manage your e-mails, gain access to your SQL database etc.

On there somewhere, will be a facility called "Password Protection" or something similar. If there isn't, again your with the wrong hosting company.

Go into this and you should get two aspects. One will be to assign users and passwords and the other will be to assign password protection to a directory on your localhost, the site plan of which should be displayed on the screen.

After you have assigned the users. Click on the directory you wish to assign the protection to, in this case:

localhost/admin/

assuming that you have installed the package to the defaults.

This means that your traffic will be able to enter "localhost/catalog/" as it is not protected, however they will not be able to get into "localhost/admin/" without the username and password.

If you apply the password protection to the local host as a whole, no traffic will be able to access the site at all, so make sure you get the correct directory...

Can't explain it any better than that mate, have fun...
