shared SSL vs. private SSL

Hi,

I'm trying to switch to a new hosting service and have a few questions about shared and private SSL certificates.

1. What is the difference, if any, between the two in terms of

a) Level of security: Is shared any "less secure" than private SSL certificate?

b) Compatibility with OSCommerce: I have read posts indicating that some people are having difficulties integrating shared SSL with OScommerce. Is this a serious issue?

c) Speed/Performance: Is shared much slower than private SSL certificate?

2. I'm leaning toward either HostGator's hatchling service (shared SSL included) and GoDaddy's economy hosting + standard (Turbo) SSL. I calculated the prices and they are about the same at $84~$87 per year.

a) Is GoDaddy's standard (Turbo) SSL a shared or private certificate?

b) I have read some complaints that GoDaddy's SSL certificates are not recognized by some browsers. Is this a serious problem?

c) Is HostGator known to be reliable?

d) Which of the two options would you recommend?

Thanks for your help!

Have a read here http://www.webhostingtalk.com/index.php

I would always go with private(full) SSL certificate

1 - The only real differences is that with a private ssl, you get to control the name shown in the url and you can have a site seal. With the shared server, you have to use the name assigned fo rthe server you are on. The rest are not issues if the site is setup properly.

2 - You'll need to read up on those hosts, as suggested, or just accept a lot of "mine is the best host" advice. As for the ssl, godaddy offers one for $15/year. That is all that you need and it works fine.

Thanks, Jack

From what I see on GoDaddy's site, the cheapest SSL they have is their standard single SSL at $30/year (http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/ssl/ssl.asp?ci=9039)

Is this what you're referring to?

They have them on sale but you have to search for the url. Once you find it, the cost is $15. Or namecheap also sells them for $15, as well as other places. The problem is that not all of the places have the same level of service as those two companies so you need to be watchful of that.
