toolcrazy Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Why don't people move their store to the root dir? I can't understand why they insist on using /catalog/? I know that this is how the CVS is setup and I also know that some people use that as a test dir and I'm not trying to tell someone how to run their business. This is just a curiosity I've had since getting involved in this project. And also, don?t they know that search engines don?t like any type of forwarding, like meta refresh, of a php forward? Oh, ok that is not 100% true, but close. Please don?t slam me, I am just curios. Steve -------------------------
networkdad Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 I don't know either...Its so easy to bring it up to the root. But then again, its just as easy to modify your .htaccess file with a redirect index.htm http://www.domain.com/catalog/default.php or DirectoryIndex /catalog/default.php Google loves my site, once i moved it up to the top.
burt Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 The obvious reason is that a lot of people "bolt on" a store to an existing website. Stick it in /shop/ or /catalog/ and it doesn't affect the existing sites architecture... Other than that ??!!??
loxly Posted January 26, 2003 Posted January 26, 2003 Even if it isn't being "bolted on", by putting it in a subdirectory it gives me moe flexibility on how I am going to use it and present it to the public. My root directory is phpNuke or PostNuke, depending on the site, and that is where there will be a "community" built that will have products available in the store and that will support the products in the store. Maybe I'll put one store in a root directory and see if it makes a difference in search engine ranking, but most of my subdirs get spidered and ranked just fine.
