Why don't people move their store to the root dir? I can't understand why they insist on using /catalog/? I know that this is how the CVS is setup and I also know that some people use that as a test dir and I'm not trying to tell someone how to run their business. This is just a curiosity I've had since getting involved in this project. And also, don?t they know that search engines don?t like any type of forwarding, like meta refresh, of a php forward? Oh, ok that is not 100% true, but close. Please don?t slam me, I am just curios.

The obvious reason is that a lot of people "bolt on" a store to an existing website. Stick it in /shop/ or /catalog/ and it doesn't affect the existing sites architecture...

Other than that ??!!??

Even if it isn't being "bolted on", by putting it in a subdirectory it gives me moe flexibility on how I am going to use it and present it to the public. My root directory is phpNuke or PostNuke, depending on the site, and that is where there will be a "community" built that will have products available in the store and that will support the products in the store. Maybe I'll put one store in a root directory and see if it makes a difference in search engine ranking, but most of my subdirs get spidered and ranked just fine.
