Adding new language and translating all product descriptions

Hi:

I have a website with about 1400 products at: http://www.kashuen.com

It is oscommerce-2.2ms2-060817. English is the only language installed right now.

I want to add the German language and translate all product descriptions and titles. But ... I want to automate the translation process.

The idea is to create a PHP script that will look in the products_description table, get the english descriptions, send them to the google translation API, and enter the german text in the table in the appropriate records/fields.

So ... here is the plan:

1.) Backup all website files and DB.

2.) Install German through the admin panel (I have the original German language folder from the original zip file).

3.) Go through every contrib ever added to the store, and make necessary mods to new language files.

4.) Create the PHP script and do the translation.

Will this work? Is there another location where product-specific language information is stored? Anything I'm missing?

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!!

Seem doable

Only problem is to ensure every "English" define is in the German language files.

If you can do step 4 this should not be a problem.

Hi Geoffry:

Thanks for your reply ... thats a good idea to look at all the "defines" in the english files. I was planning to go through all of my contribs and look for the mods there, but it makes more sense to just use the english file for that.

What I'm most concerned about is where the product information is stored in the DataBase. Is it only the "products_description" table I need to pay attention to? Or are there other locations that need to be addressed as well?

Thanks.

And BTW ... I think osCommerce is an excellent platform to build on ... I'm pretty excited with what we can do.

Category and manufacturers descriptions would be another 2.

Would be very interested in the code to compare the defines if you ever finish it.

I've had a look round and see if there are any more areas needing translation but there do not appear to be any others.

Hi G:

Actually, I hadn't really planned on writing any code to compare the defines ... was just going to do that myself by eye.

But now that you mention it ... perhaps it wouldn't be too hard to loop through the english files and make sure that all "defines" are also included in the German files.

Hmmmm ... If I get some work done on that, I'll be sure to share that code here.
