Guest
OK, i almost pooped myself it was that bad. i was installing the header_seo Contribute BUT BEFORE I DID I BACKED UP and i thought go me. we l finally installed the header_seo and tested it and found out that the subcategories where not showing. their was a problem because all that would show is the php code... i have no idea why. So i start to look into the code and start to change things (not a good idea). So after the changes i realize that i have gone to the point of no return and decide to restore my backup. WELL....... i hit restore of my newest backup and it starts but then half way it (what i think it does is) it times out. it goes to the error screen and asks me to reload or go to past page. now i am starting to get a little scared. SO i go into my php admin sql database and look for the backup within my admin folder BUT I CANT FIND IT!!!! So just in spite i backed up my database a couple weeks ago on my computer. I think i am in luck so i go into my php admin sql and import the database. Well it does the same thing. now i am freaking out. so i go back into the admin in my webpage and think that the file is to big so i try to upload a backup from weeks ago. I started to do that but realize that the file is to old and it would be a bad idea, so i hit cancel. When i did that i now have lost i entire site. i go to my address and its nothing but error, no index page or anything, just error. LONG STORY SHORT i downloaded my entire site via dreamweaver about a week ago and just uploaded that on after i deleted my entire site. i had to do some updating and lost some data but did what i could. Now i would still like to install the Header_seo but i am afraid to now. I am not sure IF i could use my backups (maybe cause their to big). if anybody has had the same problem or anything that could help me with the backups please let me know. i don’t want to go through that again. sorry for being so long

Then install heidi sql (google for it, can't miss it) and install your backup using that program. Using phpmyadmin, or any other browser based script for inserting a large file in a mysql db will work as long as the file has a reasonable size. Follow my advice and come back to as if you still have trouble restoring your backup.
WoodsWalker
When I backup using the backup feature, I always make a compressed local backup as well. I have never had to restore from a backup, but it sounds kind of hairy! ~Wendy
WhiteKnight
What you backup thru the admin/tools/backup is just the database. That does not backup any of the modules you have installed, no php or html code, etc. Whenever you make any changes to the program you need to do a backup of the files you are changing first. This could be just by making a copy of the file you are going to change and naming it "copy of file-to-be-changed.php" or by using an actual backup program that lets you specify files and folders to backup to another location like a local drive. You should always test and make changes to a copy of the site on a local machine and only upload the changed files to the live server after testing. Your hosting company probably makes a daily backup of your site and can usually restore that for you on request. Sometimes it takes a few hours to get that done and many will charge a fee for it (especially if it happens more than once). Of course, if you have to restore the database, you will lose any data entered (new customers, orders, etc) from the time of their backup to the time it is restored. But you may be able to get some of that from the existing database if you can still get access to it via phpMyAdmin or other external tools before restoring. On most hosts the database is kept in different folders (or different servers) than the website so keep that in mind when making changes and backing up. (The backup done via admin defaults to a backup folder under admin so it is on the same server as the site.) You can also have it backup the database to your local machine or restore from your local machine. You can never have too many backups (data and program). And you should test restoring from whatever method of backing up you use just to make sure you actually have backed up and can restore from it.
