Jack_mcs
There are a number of meta tags contributions, probably close to 10 now. You will need to install one of those to start. There is much more to optimizing a site than installing one contribution though. The information is available here or elsewhere on the web - you just have to dig through it. webshoptimizer
the fastest way to gain visitors and search engines to index your website is to place links to your website. Examples: - Let suppliers place a link to your website - add your website to directories (not really a boost, need a lot of links) - participate in/on subjects in forums, blog or any other website that is related to your store. Place a link in your signature or name. With more links you will not only gain customers but also will search engines visit your website more often. This results in better ranking. contributions: Canonical url links | Track search queries | skip login page | E-commerce tracking
mayo23
Agreed, the best way to get up the Search Engines is through quality link building. The more links that you can point towards your site, especially if the sites have high PR, the better your site will rank. However, you still need those keywords in the site, and the best way of achieving this is to; Make sure the keywords are in your URL - for individual products, use Ultimate SEO URLs Make sure the keywords are in the Title tag Include the keyword/s in the text content of your page All the major search engines pretty much ignore the meta description and meta keyword tags. so don't waste too much time on those. Also, don't try to cram too many keyword combinations on a single page - try to spread them out over a number of pages. Hope this helps My latest osCommerce work in progress no outside links in signatures allowed, see PM
Jack_mcs
I disagree. Links help, but unless you can get one-way links from high-PR sites, they are not anywhere as important as optimizing a page, and even then I doubt it. The search engines don't ignore either of those meta tags and will frequently use them if they are on a properly optimized page. BearRiver
I would have to disagree with your disagreement. I have a personal website that has a #1 position for all of my top keywords (phrase) except one, and I've played with the title, meta tags, keywords, etc, even removed them completely. It did very little (almost nothing) to my google rank (my site gets crawled often). I do however have a lot of great links pointing back to my site, these links also took that site from being on page 7 to near the top of page one in the matter of a month. Going from 4th place to 1st took almost a 6 months though. That being said, make sure you optimize your site, why build a house on a weak foundation?! And make sure your site has USEFUL CONTENT!!! If the user has reasons to go to your site other than to buy something, you'll get links! You know the sites that you personally bookmark? Would you bookmark your site??? Jack_mcs
I have no way to verify your results so I will accept them as is. However, your reply leaves a lot of unanswered questions, like how long you waited before adding the links, are the links one-way, what is their PR, did your sites index position change at all prior to adding the links, and so on. Also, I never stated that adding titles and meta tags is better. I said properly optimizing the page is better, and it sounds like yours never was. Anything that can be done to improve a sites position should be done, including links. I'm just saying they are not enough, in most cases, by themselves. Guest
This is all very well but you haven't actually given the guy a clue on how to add them. I have the same problem, you say to put them in the page but as I use a template monster template each products does not actually have it's own page so to speak. What is it referring to - links or meta tags?
