Should I move my Catalog to Root?

Guest

Recommended Posts

I'm having problems with getting any search engine rankings and positioning's, so I wonder if it's worth the effort to move /catalog/to root?

Right now it's www.koolkatjazz.com and with a redirect to www.koolkatjazz.com/catalog/

Somebody told me that this not good for search engines.

Please advise.

I think it is correct that search engines don't like redirects. You could either do what you suggest but then your links will be all shot, and any indexing that has been done by the search engines will be for non-existent pages. Have you thought about a home page optimised for your keyword and an obvious link to your catalogue?

I thought that I had already?

You've got your root redirecting to catalog, so you could optimise your root for your keywords, give customers something else and telling them about you before they go to your shop. I had the same issue when I installed OSCommerce and I used to redirect straight to the catalog, but because of SEO I created a dedicated home page with my target keywords with links to the shop and other features. Here: upsmart.co.uk if you want to have a look.

How do you edit an earlier posting?

Hi Pederb

The location of the actual shop would not have an effect on the search engine rankings, they will crawl the site if you tell them where to go.

You should create an XML sitemap, sign up for Google Webmaster Tools and then concentrate on getting other websites to link to you and adding unique content to the site.

Just like a jigsaw puzzle, in time everything will fall into place. Obviously, there are other aspects of SEO you may need to look at, bt this should resolve your immediate problems.

I have Google sitemap and an XML sitemap for over a year.

Thank you

Hi

Has Google indicated any errors with your sitemap, these can be seen In Webmaster tools. If you PM me the URL of your sitemap I'll take a look.

Hi

I just checked your xml sitemap against Google's records and they have 911 pages indexed from your site. Although some of the URL's in your sitemap are for empty pages, you should clean it up if you can.

Your initial question was as to why your not ranking on Google, it would help to know the following:

A. What are your top 10 keywords

B. How old is your domain

It also looks like you really need links to your site, Google shows 0 (which is not unusual) but Yahoo shows 18 which are mainly from forums. So it seems that you need Links, and Onsite optimisation to get your site ranking.

That's what I would do, but it's my opinion. I think this looks great and is a good landing site. As said above you need backlinks and people will generally link to your home page and if there is a risk of search engines ignoring the link because of a redirect, then don't redirect. I think that what you've done only adds to and takes nothing away from your shop.
