Error at the end of new install

I am have done a new install and keep getting an error (on two seperate servers) after it says that the install is finished and correct. An error is displayed near the top of the final install page that says:

 

Warning: mysql_num_rows(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in C:\htdocs\book_store\catalog\install\includes\functions\database.php on line 39

 

 

Then if I click on the Catalog or Administration Tool buttons I, of course, get an error that says:

 

1146 - Table 'bookstore.configuration' doesn't exist

select configuration_key as cfgKey, configuration_value as cfgValue from configuration

 

 

Also, as the error suggests, there are no tables or data added to the database I set up, even though it saw it and seemed to work.

 

Any ideas?
