Guest
Hi, Can anyone help me. How do I change my admin user name and password in my osCommerce? I have an idiot of a guy who I paid to design my site, who then left the UK to live somewhere in France running a B & B and has nothing to do with it since. I pay for the hosting, but the problem is he still has access to my osCommerce site. United Hostings have helped me set up a new template, and someone on another forum told me what to do if I couldn't remember my pass word (which I can). It was fine until it came to the last part where he said copy and post the encripted pass word int WS_FTP Pro. I do not have this facillity on my computer. When I update my site I just do it through the update feature in osCommerce. PLEASE someone help me stop this man getting into my account and altering prices and doing other daft things. I cannot get into the file directory because he had a different password for that. Val

I though that your hosting company offer a way to password protect your directories via their web site control panel? steve189
Hello is your site admin protected by htaccess? I though that your hosting company offer a way to password protect your directories via their web site control panel? Nic Hi FIMBLE, I'm the "idiot of a guy" to whom Val refers who was also a friend of the family at the time - after reading her post i think that friendship is well and truly over. Her post is utter nonsense, I have never had secret access and only logged in when she asked me too, usually to repair mysterious faults that had happened by themselves (as they do right? yeah right) or occasionally to backup her database. So many times I tried to give advice on optimising the site for search, I have monitored frequently using Google Analytics etc etc all for FREE I might add. The initial setup was paid for at a ridiculously low price agreed at the time as she was a 'friend'. The untold hours of further altering things at her request not to mention the fixes after the site 'broke itself' on more then one occasion further lessen the initial fee I got. Many time she emailed asking what my login was, to which I replied every time that I had no separate login, just hers that we set up as the initial admin login. I NEVER altered any pricing or done any daft things she refers to. I guess I don't need to say I am hurt after everything I have done to read her awful, lying post here. I'm still trying to figure out what the file directory or at the very least (again) my "different" password is she mentions in her closing lines. The reason I no longer have anything to do with the site is she refused to take notice of anything I said regarding building her search rankings, she just expected to be at the top of page 1 without doing any work. The site is getting customers and looking at the analytic stats still gets thousands of visitors. She was obsessed with meta tags being THE ONLY thing that mattered, nothing about building quality inbound links interested her. A monthly newsletter to the people registered on the site wouldn't have hurt but in the couple of years it's been running, I've had one newsletter. I'm afraid Vals problem is if you don't agree with her you are immediately classed as "an idiot of a guy". Steve.

steve189
Steve - what part of France did you move to? Hi Burt, I moved to the Limousin in 2005 and although tough due to the current economic climate and weak pound, love it here. Coincidently, I already lived here when Val (the nice lady who called me an "idiot of a guy" up there a few posts) came to stay for a few days. This was also before talk of her having a website was even mentioned, so her comment about me clearing off to France and having nothing else to do with her site was another little distortion of the truth. Oh well, lesson learned some people are just a**holes I guess :o) I have noticed that her site now expands out of the window on a lot of monitor resolutions, so well done there whoever is now looking after the site :o) Why the interest in France Burt? ranyardm
Gee, when you're in the doghouse... heh. Anyway, just to be helpful to said OP, it would seem by talking about WS_FTP, it would be the ftp user and password that she is looking for and getting them confused with the oscommerce username and password. An easy mistake to make. Obviously, her ISP should be able to tell her them, but not in the "encrypted password" format that whatever guide she's reading is telling her to copy and paste them in. Anyway, just thought I'd be helpful to someone whilst waiting for my topic in this forum to attract some replies. -- Martyn

The last email I got a few days before this was posted was all friendly and nicey nice. I used Filezilla to handle the initial upload of the osCommerce package prior to install then I don't think I used it again as the built in file manager for osCommerce was fine for what I ever needed to do (repair damaged index.php file a few times - these self destructing files are a nightmare aren't they?). Anyway the ftp password was exactly the same as the admin one which she'd have known if she ever properly read any of the multitude of emails and even training manuals I wrote her to help use the system (again for free). I knew she'd altered the admin login as I have been unable to backup her database (again as a freebie to help her as I'm sure it won't be done regularly - I even wrote a step by step guide with screen shots for that) and I could see that site layout had gone too wide for standard monitor resolutions but to find her post and the insults and absolute untruths within has really peeed me off. Grrr.

steve189
UPDATE: Having had no email reply from the OP regarding her false claims and accusations a telephone conversation ensued between my incredibly annoyed parents and the OP. I didn't ask for this BTW, I was out at the time but they were all friends at one time and many years ago my folks fell foul of the OP, I won't go into details, it's long passed. Lessons should have been learned all those years ago though, I guess. At first she denied posting her defamatory opening post... Then having been slightly cornered on a couple of points (and the fact that her lying words were written for all to see on a forum page right there on a pc monitor at the time of the conversation) she said she had written a post asking for help but that none of the other stuff about 'idiot of a guy' 'clearing off to France' etc had been written by her and that... wait for it.... wait for it... OsCommerce Forum Admin must have edited her post!!!! :o Clever folks these Admins, how did they know I had moved to France for starters? Good guess eh? Talk about the OP clutching at straws. The fact still remains that I was already living in France when the OP came over to stay and we began to discuss building the website. Very different to how her post made out I'd left for France to escape her and her website. She also must have forgotten that edited posts show as edited, along with a date and time of edit etc... It's easy to lie the way she does when you think everyone around you is as clueless... Anyway, eventually she did continue to claim that I had changed prices on the site (Of course I would, I would get a lot of fun from doing that, and have plenty of time to fart about.) but when this was whole heartedly and repeatedly denied her story changed to it must have been someone else..... I sense a little paranoia creeping in here, it seems the OP thinks the world is out to get at some two bit fishing tackle company. So while I'm busy being an idiot of a guy and backing up her database for her, monitoring site performance with Google Analytics, trying to build some inbound links for her (because she couldn't be arsed to do that either... "Meta tags Steve, meta tags!!! that's all you need Steve! meta tags! Steve, what do you know, you only run one of the most successful French rental property websites on the planet but I've heard about meta tags and it must be true cos a bloke in the pub told me"), I was also giving out her admin login details to members of the I Like Changing Fishing Tackle Prices Club.... ...or maybe they just hacked in... like they do.... the tricksy, price changing hackers them! ... hang on, that guy over there in the dark corner... he's looking at me funny.... maybe it was him?.. Apparently there had been some complaints from customers who, having paid one price, were then told the price was wrong. The price had obviously been changed by me or a hacker as there was absolutley no chance that the price might have: a) been put on wrong in the first place B) been a special offer that had then been forgotten about c) just been any kind of general f*** up because the OP is incapable of ever getting anything wrong. It is far easier to lie and blame someone else, I wonder how she sleeps at night? Probably very well, some people are like that I guess. Hmmmn, I wonder if it was PayPal who altered her prices (I don't know if the phantom edited prices were put up or down) but maybe they thought they could increase the prices on the site and get more money in handling charges.... ooh the devious swines, I bet it was them... or maybe that Bill Gates bloke... does he like fishing? maybe he wanted some discounted tackle.... yeah I bet it was Bill. I remember cringing at the time when setting up the osCommerce system when I was trying to explain over the phone about pasting a URL into a web browser address bar and being asked "what's a web browser"? The conversation went something very close to this: Me: "It's what you look at websites with..." Op: "Oh yes I know that." Me: "Oh right, (thinks: why ask then?) so what browser version do you use?" Op: "Outlook Express..." Me: "... ... ... erm, Outlook Express is for email, what do you look at websites with?" Op: "Oh I see..." Me: "Have you got a website showing on your monitor right now?" Op: "Yes" Me: "Good, if you see the window that the website is showing in, there are some control buttons and stuff at the top, see them? like maybe a picture of a house, maybe a red cross?..." Op: "... ... ... Yerrrss" Me: (thinks: can you see it or are you just saying you can?) "Well then, near those controls you should see a long white box with some letters in it... ... beginning with http:// and then the name of the website you're looking at... ... That white box is the Address bar and you can paste or type a website address in there." OP: "... ... ..." Me: "Are you still there?" OP: "Yes, sorry, I just caught the Send & Receive button and an email came in" Me: "... ... ..." (sound of head banging against brick wall) Oh well, I just pity the poor fool who ends up stuck with trying to help her in the future, they're bound to be wrong or an idiot. Sorry to drag on folks and I'm sure everyone in the design and development game runs into people like this, I just wanted to help this lady but I ended up getting shafted in public. (hope the telephone convo gave you a giggle at least). Steve.
