Howto install language packs when u can't read readme

i must ask this question. I already scour this forum and google for answer but to no avail.

When I download the contribution for language pack, readme is in the particular language say chinese. I cannot open the text doc to read legibly. I tried Microsft updates, IME, etc and installing all kind of stuff but I still cannot read readme .

So i do not know how to install the language packs.

I have these 3 lang packs I have downloaded and their directories are:

langpack1/admin/includes/languages

langpack1/catalog/includes/languages

langpack2/admin/includes/languages

langpack2/includes/languages

langpack3/catalog/admin/includes/languages

langpack3/catalog/includes/languages

langpack3/catalog/install/

I have following 4 directories in my system. Which of the above directories should go to which one below?

/www/mystore/admin/includes/languages

/www/mystore/includes/languages

/public_html/mystore/includes/languages

/public_html/mystore/admin/includes/languages

best if u may tell me the procedure to install. thank you!

The www and public_html directories are the same location so there are only two locations. Copy the files from the contribution to the same location on your server. Since your shop is not in the catalog directory, just act like that directory isn't there. So langpack1/catalog/includes/languages goes into /public_html/mystore/includes/languages.

Thanks Jack. i just happen to find out the solution and came back here to post it so others with my same problem can know wat to do.

"The www directory is what is called a symbolic link to the public_html directory. Think of it as a shortcut in Windows. I'm not sure if its a good idea to delete the www directory, as it may verry well be used by something. (There has to be some reason why it is there in the first place, right?) You may as well just leave it though, its not like it is taking up any place or anything. " from http://forums.asmallorange.com/index.php?showtopic=11463

I was suspecting that but I couldn't do telnet to check file permission so I couldn't tell if it is a symbolic link. And the ftp program my webhosting gives me does not allow me to do "ls -l"

End of story , ignore www directory. Just copy to public_html.

Youuwhoo!!

Regardless of what language you want to install, the steps are as follow:

1) unzip/extract your_language_pack.zip to your_lang_pack folder

2) For what your website storefront,

upload your_lang_pack/includes/languages/your_lang.php to /public_html/includes/languages

upload your_lang_pack/includes/languages/your_lang_folder to /public_html/includes/languages

3) For your osc admin,

upload your_lang_pack/admin/includes/languages/your_lang.php to /public_html/admin/includes/languages

upload your_lang_pack/admin/includes/languages/your_lang_folder to /public_html/admin/includes/languages

Note: ignore /www becuase it is only a mirror link to /public_html

4) In your ftp application to change file permission to all files you have just uploaded to 755. if using command line, it is chmod 755

When change file permission mode, also recurvse it to all subdirectory and files.

5) Now goto osc panel > Localization > Lanaguages . Then click on button "new languages" fill in your new language.

You must do step 5, if not the lang flag won't be shown on your website.

(Sorry, I cannot paste image here.)

E.g. if the directory you uploaded to is /public_html/includes/languages/your_lang_pack then you put Directory: your_lang_pack

On your desktop, open your_lang_pack/includes/languages/your_lang_pack/images, you should see a small flag picture

of the language you want to install. if you downloading chinese and it shows britain flag, just find your own chinese flag and

remember to replace it on /public_html/includes/languages/your_lang_pack/images.

E.g. name of this flag icon is icon.gif, then put Image: icon.gif

6) Finished.

7) If you see e.g.

"Warning: main(includes/languages/svenska/index.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/morta/public_html/txe/index.php on line 33

Warning: main(includes/languages/svenska/index.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/morta/public_html/txe/index.php on line 33

Warning: main(includes/languages/svenska/index.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/morta/public_html/txe/index.php on line 33

Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'includes/languages/svenska/index.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/morta/public_html/txe/index.php on line 33"

This means

1) In this esample, your downloaded your_language_pack.zip has missing file which is index.php

Copy /public_html/includes/languages/your_other_installed_lang_pack/index.php

to /public_html/includes/languages/your_lang_pack/index.php

You may then view website again. But you may need to edit the copied index.php yourself to show your desired language.

2) You may have forgotten to change file permission to 755.

No, this is incorrect. The files should be set to 644, which is what they will be automatically set to unless the server is setup not to do so, which shouldn't be the case.
