Manual Exisiting Installation Huge Problems

Greetings everyone.

So here is my story. I have a new client who has an existing site with OSCommerce hosted on another company's server. My client wants me to completely redo the site. The hosting company refuses to create a practice site for me to test changes on so the gave me FTP access to the files and an SQL dump of their database. I managed to run the dump for the database and copy all the files to my server. They have two directories one secure one normal (secure has the admin directory). My question is how do I set it up so that it works as it did on the other server? I changed the db names in configure.php files to point to the new db names and user access but it keeps giving me

"Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request."

I am running out of patience since I have spent over 20 hours and got nothing thus far. I was thinking about copying over the install directory and then running it in that directory but I am not sure if the two versions of OSCommerce are the same. I would appreciate any help. I have search through the forums for "change database name" and I couldn't really find a situation like mine. Thanks in advance.

How about using xampp and set up a test server on your local machine?

I don't understand why I would want to test on my local machine? I have access to a web server, the problem is with the installation. My question is to how to take an existing site and change it so that it runs?
