kirkdickinson
I live in Ohio and only wish to charge Ohio tax on orders shipped to Ohio. I set up a tax zone for Ohio, but every order from every state is getting Ohio tax on it. I saw a reference somewhere that said that they solved by problem by NOT marking each product as taxable. This seems counter-intuitive. Is this what I am supposed to do? Is the Tax Class supposed to be left blank unless you always wish to have taxes charged? What about food items that are non-tax in my home state? Confused about this tax stuff here. Thanks, Kirk
Guest
When you set up taxes - you set up zones as states in the country (united states). Under the zone *ohio*, you set the tax rate. All the other states (zones) have no tax rate. Therefore any orders that are shipped to other than ohio will not be taxed. Mark

kirkdickinson
http://www.oscommerce.info/kb/169 I have been to that page already. It just confused me more. The page shows a completely diffferent looking osCommerce manager than what I have. I have 2.2 RC2 installed. Which version is shown in the help file? It looks nicer than what I have installed. The directions say things like "Click on the Wrench", what wrench? On mine, I have: Locations/Taxes Countries Zones Tax Zones Tax Classes Tax Rates Starting at the top, under countries, I see most of the worlds countries and if you click on them, you can only define the country and the country codes, no tax there at the country level, at least that I can see. Under Zones, I have the countries of Austria, Canada, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, with what appears to be their respective States/Provinces. At this level, it looks like all you can do is define the actual zone. No tax rate here. Next is Tax Zones, I have defined a Tax Zone here, Zone Name: Ohio Zone Description: Ohio Tax No place here to define a tax rate. Next is Tax Classes, there is one that was here called "Taxible Goods", you can only define a class here, not set any rates. Should I create an Ohio Tax Class here? Last is Tax Rates, Under tax rates, there is one entry called "Taxable Goods", It is defined this way: Tax Class Title: Taxable Goods Zone: Ohio Tax Rate (%): 7.0000 Description: Ohio Tax 7.0% What do I need to set up differently? I am really confused with all this. Thanks, Kirk Priority:

kirkdickinson
You can adapt --> this to work in your state. I found that post last night. I think it is working now. I had to clear out old Tax zones and rates and start over. Then go back and assign all my items to the new tax. I think from my first tests that it is working now. ~Kira
I found that post last night. I think it is working now. I had to clear out old Tax zones and rates and start over. Then go back and assign all my items to the new tax. I think from my first tests that it is working now. Thanks, Kirk Assign all your items to the new tax? What does that mean? We have a store based in NC. I have set up the rate, zone and class (Taxable Goods). BUT if I set a product to Taxable Goods, it raises the price on the store, which I do not want. What I want is for the prices to be correct, and the customer only to be charged sales tax if he lives in NC. Today we got an order and the person was not charged tax. I went in to fix it and I thought it was because I had a zone called NC instead of North Carolina, but I noticed if I change it, it changes itself in the other screens. I'm just calling everything North Carolina now but I'm not sure this will achieve the desired results. I've read several other threads about taxes (CA & WA & NY, etc) and they seem to all say to "associate your products" with the new tax class, yet again, if I do this, it changes the prices on the storefront. This should be a quick and easy thing to set without problems. Am I doing something wrong or what? ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

~Kira
Yeah thanks for all the help :) Anyway I had my test address (in NC) set to primary so it was showing me the price WITH TAX on the store. That's why I thought all the prices were changing. After I deleted that NC address, and changed all the products to Taxable Goods, the price did not change on the store. So it will look normal to everyone except the people who will be taxed. Shouldn't the tax add on AFTER they select a product and begin to check out? You'd think so. I'm beginning to wonder why this cart isn't a little bit more updated. No maintenance mode? I mean, come on. ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
