Transition from 2.1 to 2.2

Hi all, I have a pretty basic question, I'm just not sure how to proceed...

I have my current shop on shop.domain.com and I need to know if I install 2.2 to shop2.domain.com, can I connect the "old" database to it?

I want to install the newest oSc and buy a template, but it'll take some time to customize everything and I would like to just change shop2.domain.com with shop.domain.com when the time comes.

In other words, I would like to temporarily run two instances of one database.

So is this possible?

If not, can you recommend better ways to make the "transition"?

v2.1 is rather old now and I don't know if you'll find anyone who could comment if the db is compatible with the newer versions. I would create a new version for 2.2 and compare the structures and fields to see if you can copy across.

In the original version of osCommerce 2.2 MS2, the extras folder has an update.php file (and some other files, apparently) to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2. I've never tried this, so I have no idea how well it works. I remember hearing that it's a pain. I would try this on a test copy of the 2.1 store first, in case it harks up the code.

If you don't have a copy of MS2, email me and I'll send you one.

Regards

Jim
