lisapeden Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 Hello, I'm having trouble installing the newest version of OsCommerce--2.2rc2a. I first used the Quick Install Guide located on this forum. I was unable to download the files into my root directory. I had to download into a directory my host calls "httpdocs." Secondly, I wanted my customers to be able to see my site simply by typing in my domain name. Therefore, I downloaded/uploaded all of the contents of the catalog folder into the httpdocs directory but not the folder itself. After that, I typed in http://mydomainname/ and nothing happened. After spending several hours going through 6 pages of posts to the Quick Install Guide trying different suggestions for fixes, I finally went to the last post and worked my way forward. At that point, I read a post from Vger stating she does not support version 2.2 rc2a. I then located the installation instructions in the 2.2rc2a documentation. I created a folder called catalog in httpdocs. I then moved all of my other folders and files into that. I first created a database and assigned a username and password to it. It is in phpMyAdmin 2.5.2-pl1. My SQL 5.0.22 is running. My host offers a 1-click install of OsCommerce, but it is the oldest version. I want the newest one with all of the templates, bells, and whistles. I tried upgrading from the old to the new, but I didn't understand the upgrade documentation. I completely deleted the old osCommerce from my database before uploading the new osC files, BTW. I'm sorry for all of my rambling. I wanted to give you all of the information you might need to help me so I can resolve this quickly. My store was on a non-OsCommerce site that was charging me an arm and a leg to host. I made the mistake of transferring my domain name right away, so now all of my customers are completely confused. Also, my apologies if I am posting something that has already been answered. I performed a search and went through 9 pages of topics but could not find an answer. I wanted to catch all of you helpful UKers before you go to bed! So now, when I type in http://mydomainname/catalog/install, I get a blank page. Thanks for staying awake reading my life story. And thank you, very much, in advance, for helping me. Lisa U.S.A.

lisapeden Posted October 30, 2008 Author Posted October 30, 2008 If you empty the contents of the catalog folder to root, to install, type your_domain.com/install.If it's in a folder, it's your_domain.com/<folder name>/install Hello Bryce, Thank you for replying to my post! I've read elsewhere on the forum we're not supposed to give out our domain names, but from a financial standpoint, I have to get my site back up ASAP, so I'm going to tell you exactly what I typed into the URL and live on the edge. I have tried typing in several different combinations, from www.LisasStitchingPost.com/install to www.LisasStitchingPost.com/catalog/install. I either receive a blank page, URL Not Found, or even a list of files in my parent directory--depending on what I type in--but no installation page. When you say your_domain.com, does that mean I need to put an underscore into my domain name? If so, where do I put the underscore? I'm sorry I'm such an airhead. I'm so tired and frustrated from working on this since last Friday. Thanks, again, for your help! Lisa
multimixer Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Hi Lisa The "your_domai.com" is just an example, with or without "_", you have to replace it with YOUR domain name, do NOT type it exaclty as it is. From there on, to make the installation work, you need to type into your browser the correct path to the directory. To what directory did you upload it? Lets say your domain is "www.lisa.com" Is you upload the complete osc CATALOG (including the folder) to your root (that means not to any subdirectory) you will find the install at www.lisa.com/catalog/install If you upload the same thing to a folder, lets say "folderabc", look at www.lisa.com/folderabc/catalog/install If you upload the CONTENTS of the catalog directory to your root lok at www.lisa.com/install If you upload the contents to a folder, lets say "folderabc", look at www.lisa.com/folderabc/install My community profile | Template system for osCommerce - New: Responsive | Feedback channel
GemRock Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 based on the info in your posts, if you still have no luck, then this is the steps you need to follow: 1. download a copy of 2.2rc2a, then unzip it to somewhere on your pc, which you seem to have done but just in case i suggest you get a new copy; 2. fire up your FTP application such as Filezella, connect to your server, then make sure you are at the 'root' of your web space, which is 'httpdocs' according to your post. Note you can't get to the ROOT of the server, you are only allowed to the root of your web space because obviously you are on a shared server; 3. on the PC side of your FTP, navigate to the location/folder of the un-zipped 2.2rec2a; 4. continue on step3 to navigate further to the folder called catalog, where you should see about 7 sub-folders plus about 50 files; 5. press Ctrl A, which would select all folders/files under the catalog folder; 6. fire up the Upload command of your FTP application; 7. depeding on your internet connection speed and the server speed, this would normally finish in a few minutes with a fast broadband connection; 8. Now, it is time to type in http://yourdomain/install; 9. follow the on screen instructions of the installation process - you are done in 5 minutes. Note that if you follow the above steps then your shop is installed at the 'root', not under any folder. The whole process should not take more than 10 minutes.
