Uploading Images w/ image folder set to 755

It has been said that if your host does not allow images to be uploaded via admin's add product feature, when permissions on the images folder is set to 755, then you should find a new host whose setup does allow it.

I'm considering changing hosts and this is one of the requirements I have of them. How do I ask them if they are compliant? The front-line tech support people responding to enquiries at these companies are most likely desk jockeys, with no computer background whatsoever, reading pat answers from a tech support book. That's fine with me as I won't need them once I'm setup, or if I do it will be simple things that are covered by their book.

But what settings do I have them check to provide me with a usable answer?

Sadly my skillset does not include setting up/maintaining a web server. But I know there are extremely knowledgable folks here who are brilliant in that area. (Winks at the lady with the pretty black kitty :)

I am very interested in a high-end hosting company, with Data Centers in Virginia and LA, (who apparently I'm not allowed to name in the forums) who offers a Grid Service (GS) account that appears to meet all my other requirements. I'm very hopeful that they meet this one as well but they are expensive and I want to make sure I ask them the question in a way that gets me an accurate answer so I don't commit myself and then get surprised.

Hope that all makes sense. Sorry to be so wordy. Any help here would be hugely appreciated!

I asked the same question.

This was the answer I got:

Your server is running PHP as a module as opposed to as a CGI with phpSuExec.

Your set up requires permissions of 777 whereas the CGI/phpSuExec set up doesn't allow 777 at all but has a maximum of 755 permissions (read/write/execute by you, read/execute by everyone else).

So, if the images folder has to be 777 for osC To work, the server is running PHP as a module as opposed to as a CGI with phpSuExec.

I guess the question to ask is does the server run PHP as a module or as a CGI with phpSuExec?

I aint no "lady with the pretty black kitty", but I thought I'd toss out what was told to me by someone who is "in the know" anyhow.

;)

If I suggest you edit any file(s) make a backup first - I'm not perfect and neither are you.

lol, I knew someone would know. Thanks so much for the answer! That type of question is perfect. I much prefer asking tech supp "which of these ..." instead of "does this work?". They seem to put more work into making sure they verify the answer.

Update:

Thanks again for the info!

Armed with that, I called the host I am interested in. At 7:00pm PST, not only was the us-based (!) tech support there, but I got through the queue in six minutes (!). A wonderful young woman, whose primary language was english (!), asked for my account info. When I told her I wasn't a customer but that I had a technical queston, she didn't even mention that the tech supp line was just for customers. :) I asked her how PHP was installed on their Grid System (shared-host) accounts, whether it was as a module or as CGI, through phpSuExec. She immediately knew what I was talking about (!) and said that she knew how it was installed on their Dedicated Virtual (DV) accounts but that she wasn't sure about the GS accounts. She put me on hold and came back with an answer in less than two minutes (!).

They install PHP as CGI, through phpSuExec. Hurray !!!!

I've never had such a wonderful tech support call in my life! I've toyed with the idea of hosting customers but I've always considered the headaches to outweight the benefits. If things continue to go as well, once I'm switched over and ready to go online, I'll upgrade to a DV account and start hosting clients there. I'm so happy!
