In catalog/includes/application_top.php find

// customization for the design layout
 define('BOX_WIDTH', 125); // how wide the boxes should be in pixels (default: 125)

That will change both the left and right columns to the same width.

This is close to what I was looking for, what if you just want to change the left column, I don't have a right column to

change.

That changes both the left and right columns. So even if don't have a right column it will still change the left.
