Shipping costs

Hi Everyone

New to OS and wondering if someone can help.

We have two aspects to our business. One is handled by a drop shipper and their postage rates relate to the cost of product, I have set this up on a table rate and this works just fine.

The second aspect is the product we ship direct, we charge according to actual shipping cost.

So what I want to know is it possible to use two different shipping attributes and how do I assign them to specific items of product.

Many thanks

Dave,

In a sense, yes you can do this. (Gee, how does that help, right?) Now, when you say "we ship direct" according to actual shipping cost, what exactly do you mean? Are you using a shipper like UPS, DHL, Fedex, etc.? If so, have you looked in the contributions for shipping module supporting your current carrier? For instance, the UPS contribution (I don't know the exact number, you'll have to look for it.) connects to the UPS server with your order's weight and shipping address and generates several prices for the various services they can provide (ground, overnight, 2nd day, etc.) If you just want to use 2 different flat rates, that can be done as well. Just copy the flat rate module to another name like "drop_ship.php" and you'll then have a second lookup table to use.

Now, if your sole basis for shipping is just the product being purchased, I'd start by looking at the contribution for specific prices per customer, which in reality does this on a customer group basis. I know this is not exactly what you're looking for, but it could be a start. You could then specify by the customer group which shipping method that group uses and yes, they can be different from each other. Now, since I don't know how you determine which method to use, other than by product, I can't be of further guidance in configuring this.

It will almost certainly require coding to make this work exactly as you want, but I don't this as being impossible.

Hi Jay

Thanks for the reply.

Just to explain a little more. Our drop shipper chargers £7.00 shipping for goods valued between £0-£100, £9.00 for goods between £100-£500, etc etc etc.

I have set this up on the table rate and it works great.

We also stock goods ourselves, one item is valued at £25. However it is very low in weight and will only cost around £1.50 to post. However the table rate would be £7.00. If we also activate flat rates etc this will allow customers to pick the lower rate and we will lose on shipping costs incurred from our drop shipper.

So I think we need to be able to filter some goods to the table rate based on cost, and then filter other items to a second table rate based on weight.

I will look at your suggestion and see if it will work for us.

Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Hi Dave,

I am currently in the process in setting up a shop for a client, and am now just coming to this issue myself. I'd be very interested to see how you deal with this, as I have the same issue. I am now, heading over to the Contribs section. If / when I get sorted here, I'll post back.

Regards,

Declan.

MVS was designed to do exactly this. Not to say it's the only way to do it; your idea of filtering by weight/cost/some othr variable would work if all your products fit in a certain filter range. You could also use one of the Individual Shipping mods to assign shipping by product. You need to pick the method that's best for you.
