His version was setup in 2002 and I figured it would be good to look into moving it to a new version before makign allot of changes to his current setup. What kind of problems to you for see in taking this step?

It might be easier to install a new store do it to look like the old and upload the old DB or at least the parts you need. It depends on what contributions you have there also.
