Download Problems

cyniks69

Recommended Posts

When customers download a product, the file downloads as a ghost file containing no data (0kb). All files are zipped with atleast 80mb in size. Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be, Everything seems to be okay all the way until they click the download link. I checked file permissions and made sure the files are named correctly. Please Help!

i'm not sure you can use zip files as downloads.. You can add the super download shop contribution to let customers download groups of files, but i also thought about zipping files and thought it could not be done

I already have the super download shop contribution, but i also have sinlge mp3 files that do the same thing. When i click on the download link, it takes like 2 seconds for the downoad to complete, it should take longer than that. The mp3 file is also empty (0kb) same as the zip files.

are you applying the filenames correctly?? since you are NOT using groups for this particular one, if you have then in a subfolder of downloads *(like downloads/music) then when you enter the filename you need to enter is as /music/mymusic.mp3

If you do not have sub folders, then are you SURE that the file names are correct and the files are in the right place?

Did you try downloading the file directly from your server via ftp and make sure that the files made it to the server without loosing information?

yeah. the file name is correct because the download link will not show up if it was not,i copied it to my root folder (public_html) and downloaded the file without osc just fine. all files are directly under download. no subfolders. i can upload and download fine thought ftp program

i cannot download a file directly throught the download folder in osc because it is protected by osc, so i copied the file to my public_html folder to see if there was a problem with my hosting. but i was able to download the file fine.

sorry to mislead you. i ment through the website. i have no problem with ftp. the only problem i am having is the download feature of osc. i tried to download the file directly through my website and it downloaded fine. www.mixground.com/mp3s/Incredible_Cumbias.zip or (.mp3) is where my file is. If I put this link directly on my browser, the file will download directly to my computer with no problems. but if i use osc download feature it gives me an empty file. The file is empty (file size 0kb) all original file sizes are atleast 2mb.

it looks like your file is NOT in the downloads folder but in a folder called mp3s - so unless you changed your configure file to tell oscomerce that, you are not looking in the right directory..

I do understand you are getting a blank file.

I think lindsay is saying you should change your includes/configure.php line to:

  define('DIR_FS_DOWNLOAD', DIR_FS_CATALOG . 'mp3s/');

in your case, given the directory you have specified in your example, and assuming your top level shop directory is in / on your server.

i THINK that is what i was saying.. He keeps saying it is in the proper directory, but the "proper" directory is "downloads" folder which he does not have his files in, which USUALLY would result in an error, but his error is not a common one..

my files are in the download directory. i have been working on this issue for 2 weeks now. i created a mp3 folder and copied the files there so i can "test" to see if the error causing it was osc or something else. i am able to download my files through the mp3 folder because it is not part of osc. but when i try to download it the proper way, which is in the download folder, it does not work. when a customer puchases the digital download, the whole process works fine. they are able to log in and view thier orders. the link in the orders show up fine, they are able to click it and the save dialog box pops up so they can save the file. when they click save, it takes like to seconds to download, it shouldn't download that soon because all files are more than 2mb in size. the file downloads successfully, but it does not download the complete file. i already checked with my hosting provider and they tried everything possible, they said the only thing that may be causing this is osc. so i believe i may have a bug or something in osc. i have been using osc for testing on my local computer, and everything works fine. but not on my host. that is the reason i "COPIED" my files from download folder to a mp3 folder i created. just to test it to see if it is my hosting. the mp3 folder is seperate from osc. osc protects all its folders with the .htaccess file so no one can access osc files and folders without permission. so i know the files have to be in the download folder, they are named correctly (including if they are in subfolders), the download folder and pub folder permissions should be set to 777 or 755, i have the download option enabled in admin, including group download, gzip compression is disabled and download by redirect is disabled also, but i tried it both ways already anyway. i also checked my file names several times to make sure no misspelling, i checked and rechecked file sizes to make sure they were not corrupted during upload, i re-uploaded them again to make sure thet was not the problem. so i hope this clarifies a bit more on my issue.

I meant to say try to download the SAME files directly from the download folder.. it could be the directory that is causing the issues

It could be the FORMAT that you uploaded the files in. Did you upload them in Binary or ASCII??? Binary is generally used for text.

I worked on this issue for months a year ago, then finally gave up. Nothing that anyone could come up with fixed the issue, and that's exactly what was happening. People bought vid clips and they downloaded empty. I also had the download controller.

Don't know what to tell you. If you get this fixed, please post the fix to this thread!

I THINK that you need to upload them in ASCII mode... Bianary, being plain text, wouldnt have the data for the videos and such.. i wouldnt think

Did you try that Deb?

Yeah. They just wouldn't download. You could see even within ftp that there was the vid in the zip file by the kb number.

I reinstalled a number of times. Like I said, I worked on this problem for a couple of months. It was really ridiculous. I felt like an idjit! But, I wasn't alone so not as much of an idjit as I would have.

YAY! I got my download to work! The problem seemed to be with the Super Download Shop v1.1 Add-on. I removed all the coding since I really don't need to use group downloads as much as single files. mp3s and zip files are downloading great! There must be some type of compatability issue with Super Download and osc or maybe i missed something when installing it. If any of you is having the same problem, remove the Super Download Shop v1.1. Use WinMerge program and dont forget to backup your files before doing so.

The super download store contribution has a load of little issues that need fixing.. I wouldnt doubt that it was the fault of it.. I think i am going to uninstall and sell ZIP files insttead of "grouped" files>
