I purchased a website from an individual and then found out there is no admin login. When you go to the admin it goes directly to Admin screen (the one with the blue background). The login.php file is not in the admin folder and neither is the administrator.php file.

The site works fine but the way it is now anyone can see the admin functions if they know how to get there.

Maybe this is an old version of oscommerce? Is there an easy way to correct this? Do I just need to upgrade the files and can someone explain how to do so in basic steps?

Thanks so much.

Yes you can upgrade from an earlier version. The full instructions can be found here (upgrade to v2.2 RC1) then here (upgrade to v2.2 RC2a), or you may even have to go via earlier upgrades if your site is even older. The upgrades need to be applied in sequence. Or, you could start from scratch with the latest version osC2.2RC2a.

First off though, if your shop is LIVE then you should protect your admin directory straight away via .htaccess files. You might be able to do this via your web host environment - create/manage protected directories. Otherwise you'll need to edit your catalog/admin/.htaccess file directly to password protect the admin directory. Have a look here for a good explanation if you're stuck.
